Graduation Day!

Basenji Training
  • Hurray! Kipawa just graduated from beginner puppy behaviour class! Kipawa was used by the trainer at the end of the class to show all the skills he learned. The only one he messed up on was the 'down', but we just learned that today, so I am not concerned.

So, for the next two months, we will practice, practice, practice what we learned and then sign up for intermediate obedience. I am going to put him in the intermediate obedience with bigger dogs though. The small dogs get him too excited. I also see this at the off leash park. He is calmer around the bigger dogs.

    I'm so proud of my boy! :D :) :D :) :D

  • Congratulations to both you and Kipawa!

  • Awesome, congrats to you both.
Pippin has a few weeks left..we are currently working on roll over and shake..some things he thinks are unneccessary but "ok, I'll do it"..

  • Congrats!!! Good job, Kipawa!!!!

  • wonderful! i expect you'll be starting agility soon? ;-)

We never did 'roll over' or 'shake'. I guess all trainers work differently. We did:

    1. Free leash walking
    2. Heeling
    3. Recall
    4. Sit/Stay
    5. Sit/Stay/Recall
    6. Down

I guess all trainers work differently.

Next will be intermediate obedience, then probably two classes - advanced obedience and agility. :D

Does intermediate obedience mean we are working without a leash? If so, I will have to prepare Kipawa for that, because he is such a social butterfly - he wants to say hello to all the dogs and all the people in the class.

  • I definitely thing all trainers are different, this one we have now is not doing some things we learned when I took Otis for OB training, but then again he is doing some things we didn't do then.
We have one more class/graduation next sunday then we are off to intermediate as well.

aWhy does all the fun +*Darn I wish I could attendb- <–--------------- Kipawa's typing Okay, had to leave that up on my post because it is Kipawa's attempt to communicate with all of you by smashing his head on the keyboard. He just hasn't learned his punctuation very well yet. But I will help him out with what he was trying to say: We so wish that there were basenji activities in our area. :( It sounds like it's going to be a very fun time. :)

Good luck with the teeth…. I try to brush Ayos very once in a awhile but I don't think I have ever been able to actually clean them. And the ones in the back forget it. I keep trying though but he will not stop chewing the brush!!! I think I will have to take him to get them cleaned at the vet, even though I really don't want them to give him a sedative, I am worried about his teeth! .. Hope you have better luck!! Or a good tecnique!

One of the games my instructor plays during graduation class is Musical Settles. Kind of like musical chairs except the one eliminated is the one whose dog lays down last after the owner sits, which is the only cue the dog gets. My basenjis have always done poorly at this game because they hate laying down on cold ground and though they will offer a sit, down is usually more than they are willing to do. Which is okay with me, we always kick butt at the recall game, basenjis are wicked fast! Anyway, at one of the many graduation days that we have attended we amazed everyone by making it all the way to the final two and then even more amazement when me and Nicky won. That was the only time my instructor made a basenji related comment which was, "See how practice and reinforcement pays off, the basenji won musical settles!"

Thanks. Yes, poor Trog earned a well deserved rest after that one! But it all worked out nice in the end. :) I'm sure Xander will get that GRC right quick and join us on the list. Happy running!

Shelley, You are right, the motivation "has" to be there, or it probably won't work. This is the first time I have taken OC with any of my dogs so I am sceptical, but highly motivated…my B will get this done.. My westie, Bogus never even learned how to crate properly...he kept on pooping in the crate and then sleep in it...nothing bothered him, noot even stinking like a dog pile. The crate I used for him was actually so small, after a lot of trials and errors and he still pooped..that is when we gave up. He did great with puppy pads..for peeing, not for pooping, that he did right next to the pad, like it wasn't supposed to get dirty or something..silly dog. He is not with us anymore, he just passed in late march.
