Philadelphia dog show

Basenji Talk
  • Hubby just told me there is some kind of dog show in Philadelphia this weekend. If i'm off work Sunday hubby says we can go. Is there anyone else on here who is either going or showing in this event.

  • Hi Forever Amber, Sunday should be a good day to go. According to Infodog, 6 basenjis are supposed to be there. It's a benched show which means that the dogs have to stay there for a certain number of hours each day.

  • Looks like Basenjis show at

    Basenjis 8:30AM

  • yes we are heading out early just for that. Philly is a little under an hour from us. I have never been to a dog show before but I'm looking forward to it.

  • We just got back from the show. It was a nice time. There turned out to be 5 bs this morning in the ring, 3 r/w a tri and a trindle. New to this so not sure what went on but I think a r/w took first. So many interesting dogs and everyone was friendly my daughter loved getting to pet all the different dogs. I talked to one of the Basenji owners before we left and she was really nice. She was very helpful and gave me her e-mail address. We will post pics later.

  • Are they easing up on the showing of trindles now? Heard some stories that it was frowned on to show a trindle.

No different then years ago with B&W;s and Tris…. depends on the judge, some like color some don't. While color should not be a factor in judging, it can and/or does sometimes make person, even judges, look at a dog differently. Lets face it, Reds typically always show more wrinkles then do Tris or Blacks, just the nature of the coloring. It was never "frowned" on, just not that many made it to the show ring. Winners Bitch/Best of Winners at the Nationals was a Trindle. As with all things, comes down to preference...

  • I have a trindle and at a hound specialty show there were four basenjis in the ring including us. Instead of announcing the placements as one, two, three, four, the judge pointed at the dogs and said one, two, three, and then pointed at my dog and said - "whatever." Didn't feel good at all….

IMO…you should report that judge. The AKC has made it VERY clear that we don't need to change our standard because in their opinion trindle is just another variation of black, tan and white. Trindle is not a fault, and shouldn't be treated as one. I wonder what that judge would say if he/she knew that bitch was WB at the National Specialty!!!

Not to mention, that is completely rude, and poor behavior from a judge...if he/she had a problem with the color, there is a much more polite way to let someone know your opinion.

  • It was just obvious by the fact that the judge placed you 4th out of 4, doubt that any comment was necessary. And that is their right to place a class as they see fit, but certainly not to be rude…. But then been there, had that with a Tri many years ago when in California 99% of all the dogs being shown were Reds... Many times I would have gotten a better look had we been standing on the interstate waiting for a bus!.. but that is dog showing

I would like to know who the judge was so I can mark my judge's book to remind me never to support this judge with an entry.

  • Kebasmom, I am so sorry to hear that, it would make me crumble to hear that comment..out of a judge's mouth too. I understand my dog might not win, come in second or third or..but "whatever"..that is sorry behaviour..IMO.
I am glad you had a good time ForeverAmber,
We just went to a dog show yesterday, it was our first time too. Didn't see any B's showing, but saw one really pretty, very deep red/white boy named Mack, sitting ever so B-like in his excer pen.

We mainly went to take Moses, Our podengo grande into the atmosphere and to meet his brother, Fiz. Next time I will bring Otis..I think Otis would like the attention, but the noise level was hard on me..very barky and loud, open venue. My kids loved it however, for about an hour, then they were ready to blow that popsicle joint..if you know what I mean.

  • Yes, there are lots of "barking" dogs at a dog show….

  • …and Moses was definitely not one of the most quiet ones in there...no, he had top make himself heard..

That is what I liked about the B that was there, he just sat there and looked at everything and anybody walking by, no noise no nothing...very B-like and poised..

Looks by the results that all 6 entered did show. One was excused for threatening behavior towards the judge. And it must have been so, I have shown to the Judge, Betty Stites many times and she is not afraid of the breed.

  • alot of these are blurry but I picked the best of the Bs.as the day went on hubby got better but unfortunately no more bs. We had borrowed my sons camera for the day.

sorry took so long had to wait for my son to help me out and he was ready to kill me by the time we were finished.

  • There was only 5 in the ring though we did see a brindle later and talked to the owner that b wasnt there at that time

Yes we talked to one of the Bs owners right before we left her name was Laura (Tammen's Basenjis) She helped me out alot talking to me about zoe i'm so glad I met her.

There was a fuss after the showing that delayed the next breed (a whippet owner was very upset about that) we asked laura about it and she mentioned that about the behavior.

  • Forever Amber, I'm glad you had a good time. Showing dogs and going to dog shows can be a lot of fun. My husband and I enjoy it a lot. There are some really great people involved with our breed.

Trust me, you go to enough dog shows and you will see plenty of basenjis NOT being quiet. It is quite entertaining when they all get going together. :D

If the dogs are having similar symptoms as in the previous years, they need to be treated ASAP! It is my understanding that many are developing the acquired Fanconi Syndrome and need to be put on the protocol. Many vets though do not have the equipment to do the venous blood gas test and get an accurate diagnosis. Emergency vets should have the equipment. Do not buy any dog treats that come from China and if the package does not state where it is from then do not buy it! Jennifer

If you ship him underneath in cargo, don't forget there are temperature restrictions. Where would you transfer planes at? This summer has been hot in many cities! Please check the requirements for the airline you will be traveling on. There is usually a limit to the number of dogs allowed on board and in cargo. You will need to make a reservation for him at the time you make your own. There may be additional requirements since you are coming from Canada, you will need to check with the USDA, the CDC and the State of Massachusetts. You can find the requirements on the USDA website and it has links to each state. http://www.aphis.usda.gov/animal_welfare/pet_travel/pet_travel.shtml You need to make sure the carrier will fit under the seat so if the carrier you are considering is much larger than the large size Sherpa brand bag I doubt it will fit under the seat. I used to travel with Arnie onboard about 10 years ago before 9/11. I trained him to get in and out of the Sherpa bag and to stay in for short periods of time. He almost always laid down in it. He never made noise even when we were in first class and they served food! Most people did not even know I had a dog. I also made sure I was comfortable carrying him in the bag. I figured if the airline employees thought I was struggling with him then he was too heavy and he would not be let on the plane. He was an older pup but weighed about 18-20 lbs. Jennifer

i bought my wife a nice basenji charm several years ago. It was pretty nice. I had to order it as most dog places/stores/gifts (unless at a dog show) do not carry basenji stuff.

Yes I agree Pat, Fort Funston could get very crowded and dangerous for smaller dogs as packs of bigger dogs playing could cause injury. My 2 Basenjis were very good and stayed pretty close to me and got used to the crowds. The only problem I had there was with this lady who had an older Tri color female Basenji. It would bite my blk/wht, Nika who was 1-1/2 on the butt. A few times of that and I stayed way away from her. The problem is Nika was a very playful girl and never did anything like that. A few times of getting nipped on the butt started her doing it to other dogs and Basenjis. A Basenji would want to play and Nika would chase and give a nip and the the other dog would get mad and a fight would occur. Nobody would ever get hurt thankfully. It was rare that it would happen as I took them there for 9 years, mostly on the weekend without problem. We had a lot of fun and people loved the Basenjis! Ringo, the red/wht was a very entertaining clown when we'd go down to the beach.
