Preferred foods…

Basenji Talk
  • Kananga is not normally a Basenji that is motivated by food. I know he loves fresh cooked chicken and yogurt, but last night I had a good laugh…

I had made some alfredo sauce w/ pasta. I went to sit down and eat it, and Kananga was staring right at me from about 2 feet away and "licking the air". I've never seen him do this before around food. He must really like the scent of this sauce. He thought he could eat it all from a couple feet away. Such a silly boy. I did give him a chance to lick the bowl after I was finished. Just for a few moments but he was happy. He gets table scraps every blue moon because he's so picky. :D

I only do that because he's polite and doesn't try to jump up. He sits there like a good boy.

  • That was sweet that you let him have a little being polite and not jumping has its rewards.

Kembe always slept in our bed up until these last 2 years of her life. She was a bed and blanket hog - legs stretched out and took over the bed. I put her doggie bed in our room right next to our bed in her latter years - I was afraid of her falling or jumping off the bed and getting hurt.

Agree with all above - you also might like to try mixing a teaspoon of sardine/tuna with a little water and spreading it over the food. Good luck!

I was reading up a bit on fanconi and found this website that states as part of the protocol: (http://www.basenji.org/ClubDocs/fanconiprotocol2003.pdf) 2. Any good quality dry food may be fed, with the addition of at least one can per week of HIGH PROTIEN ?wet meat? mammal meat based dog food (Beef, Lamb?etc.) to replace long-chain amino acids and phosphorus. Poultry based foods have proven far less effective in management of this disorder then mammal based meats. The only exception to this high protien diet, in this protien-losing uropathy, is documented renal failure (increasing BUN/CREATININE). In this type situation, see the ?RENAL FAILURE HYBRID PROTOCOL? section later in this instruction set My dog doesn't have this but I feed Wellness Core and she loves it. I also feed senior wellness to my older chow who's a picky eater and just add a bit of wet sometimes and he gobbles it up :)

kiroja, I never thought of the halter fleece. That would be a better fit in some cases. Store bought fleece is a great idea. I'd look for the more expensive, natural fleece or a tight fleece synthetic with a good backing. It'd still be cheaper than the alternatives on the market (and, as said before, easily washable)

Caesar started doing this around 4yrs old, or I started noticing it then….the chewing licking air after dinner for a while? I massage his jaw at the back and it loosens the food. He was officially ready for a teeth cleaning (big bucks) at age 5 and probably had that problem all of his life. Teeth were all fine. Now, after dinner, he comes to me to rub the back area of his jaw to get the food out. He must feel a real difference now that his teeth are clean. I dont ever stick my fingers inside his mouth, just rub the outside and it is good enough. I feed Caesar Innova Evo and Natural Balance Duck and Potato back and forth.

My Hollie girl eats from the bowl sometimes and sometimes she takes a few minutes to another room. She constantly "hides" her dogfood, in corners, under a doormat, under my bed pillows, etc. I don't know if this is something that all basenjis do, or if it is because she had been a stray when I adopted her. Either way, she is certainly entertaining.
