Another basenji story

Basenji Talk
  • Hi all,

Just wanted to share - when I joined this forum in February, we only had one basenji, a tri girl Lana (we also have an akita and a boxer, but that's beyond the point). Then we got on a waitlist for another puppy, a brindle girl. And we actually got her! She was the most gorgeous thing I've ever seen, and so soft, and cute, and cuddly. I was so ecstatic! Well, long story short, a couple of really bad things happened in our family two days after we got her, and I had to take her back to the breeder. That probably was one of the saddest things in my life. Well, now, 8 month later, we still only have one basenji, our Lana. But now I just completed all the required health tests, waiting for results. If everything comes back normal/good/clear/etc, we will be breeding Lana this fall! Hopefully at least one of the puppies will be a red girl, and then we are going to keep her, and we will have TWO basenjis! I can't wait, keeping my fingers and toes crossed!

  • Oh how sad, i'm sorry to hear you had a bad time and had to return your little brindle girl :(
Hope Lanas test comes back ok

  • Hope everything works out okay this time

  • Hope all goes well with Lana and your tests are good. So sorry you did not get to keep your baby one.

  • Thaks guys,

I will keep everyone posted on Lana's tests.

  • Well I finally got tired of waiting and called OFA today. So far, I have results of two of the tests: Her hips are ok, and her Fanconi is clear/normal. Waiting for the eyes and they thyroid results! Eyes should be ok according to the vet, just need the CERF, so the only one I am really waiting for is the thyroid.

  • What was her actual hip rating?

  • Don't know yet, haven't received the actual papers, they just told me over the phone that everything was ok.

  • @lvoss:

What was her actual hip rating?

How do you find out what the actual rating is? Got the papers yesterday, it just says "GOOD" on it.

  • Good is the rating. There are 3 ratings that are considered normal hips: Excellent, Good, and Fair. In our breed we see many of HD dogs come from families with a family history of Fairs.

Ah, ok… Sorry for the silly question, still new to all of that...

  • Does anyone know when the results appear on the OFA website?

  • They usually appear within 2 weeks of being recieved in the mail. Sometimes sooner than that sometimes later.

  • Here's an update on Lana:

since the Hips/Eyes/Fanconi is all good/normal/clear (still waiting for thyroid), we actually went ahead and selected the male, absolutely stunning Ch. Bushbabies Red Ryder, from Bushbabies Basenjis in Livermore, CA. Waiting for Lana to come in heat! They are a very good match, body and personality, should be pretty nice puppies!

@eeeefarm said in Can a male Basenji live with another male dog?: Tamu was considerate of Lady when she started to fail, The Duchess, a bitch bred by us, went to live with a another Basenji bitch. When Tok started to fail, the Duchess felt it her duty to feed her and went miles out over the fields, hunting. She brought back flea-ridden rabbits on an almost daily basis which she gently nosed towards the aging Tok. While she appreciated the deed, their owner didn't like the choice of diet which the Duchess provided for her friend. She was utterly devastated when finally Tok crossed the Bridge at 15 +

Lovely photos! your b's are gorgeous! Re: food….. after working in a dog grooming business, i must say i am amazed at the amount of people that come in with their overweight fluffies (i call them fluffies as its usually the maltese X's and shihtzus etc) that have no idea that... human food shouldnt be their diet! or what they feeding them is wrong and i dont know how many times we've tried explaining to either cut back or go on the proper food and they dont understand?! i dont understand how people can have such a hard time understanding food/nutrition for their dogs. I understand there are many different way etc which is all fine, but as long as its in the right moderation and its nothing ridiculas (such as a vegatarian diet.....deadly serious.... its like c'mon luv, they are carnivores...) anyways thats my rant :D

I saw a basenji at the dog park I like to go to once, Fleet People's Park in Winter Park, FL. Was neat to actually see one up close like that for once. I've never saw a full blood one, just my mixes ;)

my thanks to all of you for your wonderful advice - i will take everything that you all have said into consideration before making a decision - however my wife and i have decided that our grieving over the loss of our 4 year old is not over yet so we are going to delay any decision until we can get past this point - with that in mind, and realizing how difficult these discussions have been for me, i am going to unsubscribe myself from this site until such time as we can come to better terms with our situation - again, my thanks to all of you for trying to help - Manny
