So I've not given up on this. I went back to rainshinefoundation.org.au and researched it a bit. It looks legitimate to me, and I'm really skeptical. This isn't an endorsement. They claim they are funneling the majority of donations back to the people they are providing assistance to. I could get behind this. Is a Basenji Hunting Bell worth $300 USD? In my best Texas accent, "Hell Yeah!" If they really are sinking the percentage of money they receive back into direct support as they claim on their website... it's hard NOT to get behind that. I'm still trying to verify that. Feel free to chime in. Coconut is too big. Western Buckeye is too thin. If the above is legit... I don't want to compete. I don't want to make something that mimics those from Africa. If it's legit... I'd rather support the cause and spend the $300 USD. So mine have to look different. They have to resonate sound. Which wood? CNC engraving? Laser engraving? Slots? Collar? Clasp? How do I support Basenjis? Tooling is going to cost a bit. I think I have have the bell figured out. I may also have the clappers figured out too, but I need to test all of this. The part that concerns me is the collar. Weaving, macramé, braiding, sewing... Anyway... these are thoughts in motion...

I only have one boy of unknown parentage as he is an adoption but my guess is that they probably do "know" family by scent if not sight. Their differing reactions to "family" probably relates back to the "pack" mentality. A female may have two daughters that she treats completely differently due to her perception of their ability to challenge her as "alpha" female in the future. I would guess it is similar for males. Time together as a "family", as with humans, is probably also a factor. Just my thoughts.

Thanks for sharing the story. My dad and his two basenjis recently made the local paper. We had no idea he had been interviewed until two of my puppy buyers mentioned having seen my dad in the newspaper recently. They were very sweet and cut out the article for me so I could see it since I don't live in the Bay Area. The link doesn't have the photo that went with the article that showed my dad with Cole and Levi, for some reason called Guy in the article. http://www.mercurynews.com/ci_9406464?IADID=Search-www.mercurynews.com-www.mercurynews.com

Isn't it amazing that B's are capable of such treachery? Abbey pulled a good stunt once. I was sitting in my recliner eating 4 Ritz crackers out of a napkin. She was "asleep" on the sofa or so I thought. When I got finished eating the crackers I folded the napkin into a tiny little square, flattened it out, and put it under a stack of books and magazines on the coffee table. After a couple of minutes Miss Abbey wakes up and stretches really big like that was the best nap ever. She climbed down off the sofa and went around on the other side of the coffee table and stretched again. All of a sudden she reared back on her hind legs, knocked all the books off the coffee table, grabbed that napkin and ran! A napkin thief and an actress too!!!
