How to stop bad behavior

Behavioral Issues
  • After we got Jaycee she would play and play there were four of us and the Shiba and Pom to help wear her down. She would rest look out door get up and play and then take a nap and then ready to go again.

We have all learned lots of playing and walking and then you get your rest time. Jaycee gets tried and ready for bed like a little kid between 9:00 and 9:30 every night.

We would not change her for anything just Jaycee being Jaycee lots of fun. I would have to say Corrnia not getting her energy used up and your the new play toy.

Good luck and have fun let know how its going.

  • Oi!! I'm looking at shredded toys right now. But I let him do it "cause shredded toys are better than shredded couch!! Still love him!!

Exactly… shredded toys are OK.... ggggg .... shredded couch... is not... and I have found that even the shredded toys are still fun to play with.. and if you have the time and put in the effort.. you can "restuff" sew them up... so they think they have a new toy to "un" stuff

  • We have a lot of those same toys must have came from same store Ha! Ha!.

I gave up one day and I just let Jaycee chew on the knobs of my desk I can replace them they are metal and while she has been getting her teeth she has really chewed on them. No one can tell but me when I go to open them not smooth any more.

  • All Buddy's toys are shredded. He can unstuff one in minutes. I keep the shells and what not and he still plays with them. Luckily he does not swallow anything. I'm always picking up lint and pieces of this and that toy or vacuuming.

  • The trash is an issue, i of course agree that it needs to be off the floor, but as i've said, we live in a studio. I suppose i need to invest in a tall trash can!!
We walk for at LEAST 2 hours a day..all around and through town. Stopping sufficiently for sights and sniffs. I see our walking time as her time. sometimes all at once, sometimes in increments, but then i try to play with her with our toys and all she does is fly and try to nip me. Very little interest in anything that isnt a bone. I understand she's seeing me as a play mate.. i read somewhere that if you cant be the alpha, then you should just give in and love them and they'll feel so bad for you that they'll love you for it. hah, which is sometimes true w/ corrina but other times shes a bully.

i was just having a stressful day and needed to vent to you guys haha. Corrina is 2-2 1/2 and was in a puppy mill for the first 2 years of her life. BRAT rescued her, after she was bred a few times and left to die, and immediately spayed her. So i can see her having some issues, and i try to embrace them all, but sometimes its exhausting.

I agree with Rita Jean, I wouldn't trade this crazy pup for anything in the world, i'm just trying to be a better mom and acclimate myself to her needs. Which is reverse to everything ive ever learned about dogs… they're suppost to acclimate to their new homes! but whatever, appreciate the responses, and enjoy reading about everyone elses children. :) Corrina's been yawning quite alot lately, i take that as a compliment, bc instead of getting hyper, she yawns, licks and looks out her window.

2 hours of walks is a lot. Maybe her hyperness is diet related. What are you feeding her? Wow 2 years in a puppy mill?! Why would she be there that long?

Great point!! She gets the most hyper after her meals… almost immediately like i can call it.

Right now she's on Purina One, dry food for adults. Is there a special diet for hyper dogs? I saw at our local pet store that they sell treats called "mellow mutt." They're always out, so im assuming they work.. ive been trying to catch some and try them on her.
    Thanks for the help!

Get a better quality food. Purina is cheap grocery store food. Go to a pet store where they have better quality foods like Solid Gold or California Natural. Don't buy anything made with animal by-products, corn or wheat.

  • yeah she likes california natural. didnt know it would help with her energy level. great news! just got back from a nice 3 hr walk w/ a friend. Now we're passed out on the couch and mommy has some quiet time. Good day. :)

also, i vaccume stuffing at least 3 times a day. my neighbors/tennets must think i'm an impulsive cleaner!! haha.

    take care!

First, yeah they do the flip and butt in face. I see it as invitation to play/chase mostly. Kind of shaking my head here over the rest. You already have a breed known for dominance and protectiveness of property/family with the Boerboel. Basenjis (I assume you mean 6.5 not 65 years old :) ) are not known for tolerating same sex. Sometimes they do, but not a sure bet. Plus, your Boerboel is still a puppy. By age 2 or 3, that compliance with the Basenji being alpha can go down the drain at a drop of a hat. That happens, and he hasn't killed the basenji... you have to keep 2 packs running, ensuring they never have contact. Then you bring in a mixed breed... which is all a Mastador is. No way on earth to know how much it will take after the lab side or the Mastiff. AND it's another male. So now you have potentially 3 dog aggressive male dogs, with 2 of them large enough to inhale the basenji. I am not sure about the breeders who placed the Boerboel, certainly not the owners letting you bring in the Mastador. I want my male dogs to have a chance of a peaceful, unstressful life. I think the chances in your home are already approaching really low numbers, and the Mastador is going to bring that closer to zero. The safety of that poor basenji is beyond precarious. I wouldn't want those 3 males in the most experienced of homes, one already fully ready to and experienced in running separate packs. I sincerely hope you reconsider the Mastador. And no, getting a female won't help. Until the Boerboel is fully mature and you have a handle on what your pack is, adding any dog is going to up the risk of issues.

@DebraDownSouth: Fran, there are times when I might mean to be condescending, but I assure you that it won't be "a little" or usually any question. That you could take my comment above as condescending… I can only suggest you may simply want to block my posts because it is entirely unlikely I will write 100 words to say what I said in under 20 because SOMEONE might see my observation as insulting. Now if I had said it condescending, such as: How could you THINK it could be that? Don't you think any dog living with females would already have reacted? How silly! The person threw out the idea of periods, which sometimes could be it .. and btw, pregnancy hormones set some dogs off… but it hit me he had lived with them too long for that to be probably. It wasn't an insult to the OP, just a response. People contradict my ideas daily on here, doesn't make them condescending or insulting. THEN, I could see it. I simply tossed out a quick response addressing that logically it probably wasn't that. If you read that as condescending instead of my own view, I am sorry. One helpful rule for forums is that you look at any post and see if there is another TONE than the one you ascribed. If there is, take the other. Like your post. I COULD think you are a jerk, not at all "friendly," addressing this here and hijacking the thread instead of sending me a private message. Instead, because I see you post a lot and like you :), I took it exactly at face value... you simply are expressing your view and trying to be helpful. So please remove any tones you might ascribe to the answer. The tone in my head is simply factual, that I am not responsible for your taking that as condescending and probably won't be able to stop you seeing other posts that way. Now if I actually say something you cannot take any way than as an insult, feel free to let me know. But the above... sorry, Fran, it was simply a logical observation. LOL, and in fact, let me now be "condescending" to my post. (I am joking while making a point.) SOMEONE (but it will be me, since it just hit me where I could easily be wrong...) could have responded to my post and said: Yeah, but dds, you are wrong because maybe she has an infection or urinary tract infection also with a period, that might do it. See? Debra, not a problem. Thank you.

Hello, I just wanted to send a quick update on Nulla. She is doing so well! We started a dog training course where my boyfriend and I are the alpha dogs. There is not treats involved and it has shown amazing results. Nulla has been in the course for about a month now. We have had no eating problems from her (no barfing, no not eating what we set our for her), no behavioral problems (no chewing my shoes, etc). She seems so happy and I am sure she is gaining weight (although I have not weighed her). I think dog training is completely necessary and we've seen HUGE results in Nulla. Everything I posted about before is no longer a concern. Thanks for all the input though. Take Care :)

She-Ra's no fan of the rain, that's for sure. We use pee-pads and these past few days we've gone through quite a few (had a pretty rainy spell), but if we go out with her she's usually okay.

Well last night was good. My daughter wasn't feeling to well so I went to lay with her on her bed and our B came with us. When it was time to get off the bed, my daughter took him down and he did not show any aggresive behavior and when it was time to exit the room he didn't growl or anything. This is a good step though I still haven't been able to stop the nipping but hey it's still good!

@jys1011: How should you allow dogs to "meet"?? Neutral territory or in a home?? Should you use a gate in between first? Or just on leash?? I agree neutral territory is best - not in one or the other's home. if you must - do it outside. as for a meet & greet routine, I allow "first name, last name" first name = head or nose sniff. last name = toosh sniff. I let my dog meet & greet on leash, so I can correct any bad behavior. if all goes well, I let them play in a safe area (fenced or in house) and let them sort things out - supervised of course, incase a serious fight breaks out - but that hasn't happened (yet… knocks on wood).
