• 😕I have been wondering whether i am over-reacting or not, when i think about how others tend to treat my basenji at times they feel like playing with him. They tend to annoy him as they think it is fun for the dog, while i have a totally different opinion; i think the dog is annoyed and tends to play in an angry way, something i don't like at all. Then i am pissed with those who do it, but i don't dare tell them not to. you see i don't want to sound impolite or overreact.
My basenji is a very sweet natured dog and the last thing i want is to have his behaviour changed because of such little mistakes.

  • Thana,
i think you are right and shouldn't allow people to annoy your Basenji to get him to play, it could spoil his nature, and make him snarky. Tell them thee are other ways of getting him to play without making him angry.

    I agree:)
I have to keep telling my husbands sqauddie friends not to do this when they come round for a few beers:rolleyes:

Nice to see you on here again:D Belle says hello to Mr Eko:D

I agree as well. Sometimes people will come up rather fast into Otis' face, especially at the petstores, and he backs up a little bit so the corner him all for a pet..I think people should learn to read dogs body language. I don't want him or any other dog for that matter to get cornered and feel the need to voice their opinion, i.e snark..

  • People can be unaware of the effects of their actions on a dog. Children should be taught never to approach a dog but to ask first if they can pet the dog. Then if it's OK to put the hand down low to let the dog smell them first. Kids would always want to pet my 2 previous Basenjis and that's what I would make them do. They have to show respect for the animal. Some adults assume that dogs like to be patted real hard on the head. That can be pretty annoying!

I had a hyper German friend who would come over in the nineties and 1 day he grabbed my rw's head and blew in his mouth. I told him immediately to stop it! I had to tell him sometimes to take it easy with him.

By all means, don't hold back. There's nothing impolite about telling others when their behaviors & actions are inappropriate. I just don't care - my dogs, my way. My sister's boyfriend is a boozin' fool with a lab. He doesn't understand there are differences between these breeds, almost opened my patio door to step out for a smoke while my Bs were loose - I stepped in front of him & locked the door, nostrils flared. Then I caught him letting Trinity lick from the top of his beer can - hell no! It may seem cute or funny to some people, but not to me. I took the beer can from his hand & put it on the counter. He thinks I'm crazy & ridiculous & I think he's a putz. Then there was a lady in the pet store the other day who reached for, hesitated, & drew back from Denver like 3 times - you know by this time I can only assume Denver is annoyed & I warn her it may be better to pat Trinity on the head - so what does she do? reach down lightning fast and aggressively rub his head! Hmmmm…I just looked at her - I wanted to ask 'what's wrong with you?', but instead paid for our things & left. Denver must have sensed she wasn't all that smart & let her enjoy his incredibly soft head! 😉

  • And ya, what is it about blowing in a dog's face that drives them nuts? My husband found this out by chance one day; even just the noise will drive Trinity crazy. She doesn't get mad, but it sure gets her fired up. She jumps at him & Denver crouches down with his his butt in the air & pounces all around with his front legs all stetched out - I love it

You are the voice for your Basenji. I agree, "don't hold back" and tell people to bug off …in a nice way, of course. 😉
