    Has your vet consulted with a veterinary toxicologist about this? The liver is capable of repairing itself over time. Did you ask if the lowering of the enzyme value back towards normal is a sign that the liver is healing?

    I don't chew gum but I guess the sugarless gums can be toxic. Regular sugar gum wouldn't hurt.

    Too much sugar is not OK for them…. and can cause problems

    What I meant was a one time incident not on a regular basis. I had one of mine grab and eat a whole See's chocolate bar, the kind the kids sell while I was outside. That had chocolate and sugar and he was fine.

    I'm sorry to hear you are dealing with this, I hope you figure out what is going on soon. I have seen articles on Xylitol (an ingredient in sugarless gum) online…if you google it, there is quite a bit if information out there. Tosca got a piece of chewed Trident once, and I called the vet after, espcecially since they are such little dogs. The vet told me not to worry since the gum was chewed, and most likely the Xylitol was already gone, but did say that even 1-2 pieces of unchewed gum can cause problems. This always worries me when we have visitors over cause Tosca loves to explore purses:P Luckily, we haven't had any other run-ins so far...good luck!

    I didn't realise that gum could be so dangerous. I hope willow and Barkley soon recover.
    My old Basenji had a liver problem, nothing to do with gum, but the vet prescribed a powder called Samylin to sprinkle on his food to help his liver and also Destolit tablets.
    As someone has already said the liver can and does repair itself in a lot of cases.

    Try the liver cleansing diet from Dr Dodds. Worked on one of mine to bring down the enzyme levels.

    Thanks for all the insight! I am going to try this diet and get back to everyone. Right now, we have them on Fish Oil pills and Denysol (sp??) The good thing is, the pups are acting just fine! :) It is just those darn liver values!

    Did she always have them or did they start after something/some time? Do antihistamines clear the problem?

That is so scary!! I doubt the big manufacturers would ever allow a real study to see the light of day, but I would love to see one done. Just the thought makes me want to keep feeding my girl human grade foods. Yeah the same here, her research indicated that raw chicken wings were the optimal food and contain pretty much everything needed. I guess if you think of some of the processed crap they have in supermarkets trading as food for humans you can imagine how low the bar can go for pet food.

    I read something recently about the whole mercury in tuna thing that I found very interesting and very educational. Before you ask, no, it was not info put out by the fishing industry. It was a book I was reading a little out of that was about the health benefits of a kosher diet. It stated that there is something neat about tuna fish that I hadn't heard before. In tuna, there seems to be some chemical or property which lends itself to the purpose of removing mercury from our system. Because it has been a little while and I didn't pay close enough attention I cannot tell you what this property that the tuna has is and I am sorry for that. I'm sure it would be wise to further research information about it. But it was published information that suggested that eating tuna fish actually reduced one's likelyhood for mercury poisoning, in spite of what the mercury test results indicate the tuna to have. I guess this is sort of like how they are now telling us that the use of sun block may actually be increasing our risk of skin cancer. Personally, I think we will all eventually die from something, and over-worrying something like this is not a direction I will choose to go. But that is a decision which I have made only for myself, you will have to make your own. Perhaps some of you out there are already aware of this tuna/mercury study and can share your knowledge with us.
