I am a new Basenji owner of a 6 month baby girl and I love her so much. she is funny and playful yet a little devil too. I am confessed about if I am rasing her right or not - since I have had her and she is still not fulling potty trained and she is not a very good listener.

  • Welcome! Sounds like a typical Basenji. Make sure you take her out to pee right away in the morning and reward/praise her each time so she get to know outside is where she needs to go.

  • Welcome to the forum, as already said your baby sounds like a typical Basenji, they have not got the best listening skills in the world. And yes they can be little Devils, lol.
Please post some pics if you can.

  • Welcome to the Great world of our Basenjis. As long as you love your baby the rest will come hang in there.

  • She is in her kennel on and off during the day and night up to 12 hours. My boy lets her out but not for long before he is off again playing, so I have decided that maybe a good idea to find a new home for her. I feel horrible about it but I don't want her to become sad or a bad dog becuase of not having enough time to play.

  • How long have you had her? Do you have any ideal as to were you will find her a home ?

What was your plan originally? Was the dog for your boy? Do you not want to spend time with her? Why don't you take her out for walks together?

  • No not yet - I am thinking I will give her back to the breeder becuase she said she knows someone who will take her.:(

  • What breeder did you get her from? Is she AKC? I do not know the breeder so I may be speaking in the wrong here but here goes. I am to say that you must have bought the dog and if so how do you know for sure that the bredder has a home or just going to sell the dog? Please let us know who the breeder is. Thank you.

I am so sorry to hear that Koda might not stay with you. If the breeder say she will take her back , by all means do. Were did you get her? Best of luck to all of you.

I do want to spend time with her - but I work 3 jobs now and when I got her I did not. Yes she was for the boy but he said he would spend time with her and all he does is let her out to pee and play for 20 mins then he is off with friends. I get home most night at 10pm during the week and then we go to bed. So she only see me some nights and on weekends - She sleeps with me at night and is a little cuddle bug. But I still feel like she more playtime that I can not give her. I am so upset about the whole thing and made at myself for thinking my son would be better. Kids just wanna play not take care of a puppy when he want to play with friends.

  • She is from MN. Sweeter pets.com - I am just trusting that she will do the right thing and give her to a good home. What else can I do. I want to get a good home where she will be as loved and I am, but with someone who will give her the excerise etc… that she needs.

  • Has she already been spayed?

  • yes she is and all up todate on her shots.

  • Can I ask what color she is?

    Rita Jean

  • tri color more Red and white with a little black mix on her back.

3 jobs is a lot. Kids say they want a pet then the novelty wears off quickly. Don't be too hard on yourself.

  • It sounds like she is a red and white with some sabling.

    Who are her parents?

  • Well I looked up the kennel on the web and she has several breeds so I called her. (Betty) This what I found out.
I ask if she any Basenji puppies would be for sale in the fall of this year?
    I was told no.
I ask did you know raise them in the past?
Yes and they are my favorite breed of dog but I had a hard time getting (RID) of them last litter.
I said I am just starting to look and had seen were some of the dogs had this fanconi test thing not sure what it is did you have to do that.
No there was no reason I had the same (stock) for seventeen years.
I then told her thank you for your time and she said wait a min I still have one female that is 5 months old.
    I ask color?
Darker red color brindle with white.
    I ask how much?
    $400.00
Now I am not sure but if this is your puppy she is not giving it away.
If it sleeps with you at night and you have some time on weekends you could get your son to maybe go to park and maybe they could play ball frisby and he would learn to love her more.
What ever you do as much I hate to say this would you please make sure this puppy does get tested for Fanconi. Let us know what your going to do please and maybe everyone on here can help find a home if all else fails.
If I am incorrect about the breeder I am sorry this what I feel and see. Thank you let us know.

Whatever she is, she's a little doll. It's nice to know that the displaced pups are finding such good homes.

Before you get a puppy… go to the Basenji Club of Canada and Basenji Club of America websites and read up on Fanconi and other heritable diseases. ANY breeder not testing for these disease is NOT someone you should spend your time or money on one of their puppies. Too bad you didn't look 4-5 months ago... there was a lovely litter of Khani's pups up in Drumheller! Best of luck to you!

I saw the DNA kit in an Orvis for Dogs catalogue (you can't spend more money for a dog than with Orvis!) and in at least one other as well. I'm sure you can find one via the internet! Good luck,. Anne
