    This boy is darling!

Looks older then 7 or 8 months? And yes, this is now the time of year that you start to see more rescues… at 7 to 12 months... when people decide it is really NOT the breed of dog for them... and they are too busy to really care/train the pup....

  • Looks like he's in Minnesota (MN), not Michigan (MI)

  • He is is MN it is Chaska. Not sure were that is but anyway. His little face is so sweet. This makes me sick I hate it when get a puppy and give it up. There should be something like when we have our children they are yours for life like it or not. Maybe we could write them off on our taxes then Ha ! Ha!

  • Im calling to see if they are willing to release to rescue.

  • That's probably 10 minutes from here…. If only this was the right time to get a 2nd Basenji. Still working on a few minor issues with my B right now....

  • @dmcarty:

    Thank you!!

  • Left a message and asked if they release to rescue and at the minimum they should do the fanconi test. It's interesting because there are some other animals at that HS that are listed as Basenji Chihuahua mixes. There was a 'kennel' names Warrens that used to have some mean basenjis that also had quite a lot of HA and what we now know is fanconi - that shifted into Chihuahua I wonder??????

FYI - your geography of the day - is that Chaska is SW of the Minneapolis metro area

  • Let us know what they tell you if they call back. Thank you for the lesson in geography I needed it I surely did not know were it was located.

Yes it is ridiculus how pups are so dispensible( is that the right word?). He sure is darling, and I would love to get him, but we are full, besides if I get more room one day..I want a little princess

  • Sorry about the MI and MN…I'm from California! What do I know? Geez, I should be ashamed, I use to teach school.

Thanks for responding. I emailed and showed interest but the ad clearly states they will not provide transportation. Any suggestions on transport groups? I can't stand seeing our babies being discarded like yesterday's left overs. I agree, people don't see the puppy stage through and dump the dogs.

I have a leather ottoman in the shop now being repaired thanks to my youngest. We won't mention the shoes that I've lost, little holes in down comforters, etc. etc. Y'all know the dance...don't you? 😃

  • Yikes, I just called and left a message. Rocky will likely go to one of the Petco or PetSmart adoption spots over the weekend. I worry he will end up with another family who aren't familiar with Basenjis.

  • Heard from the Humane Society and release to rescue is not something they even knew about. Let me tell you his story. He was in a pet store for at least 4 months and this one woman felt bad about it after watching him and feeling bad - BOUGHT HIM for $300 and brought him to the Humane Society. He subsequently was attacked by a bigger dog but is ok. The woman didn't even stick around to get any papers - I do have the name of the pet store and might call and scare them to see where he came from.

What makes it evern stranger is that the site also has a female listed as a chihuahua basenji mix - but she is a basenji - never barks - was taken from a neglectful setting. From the description and picture - she appears thyroid affected - I asked them to find out what thyroid test the vet did and sent her off thyroid info and fanconi testing material.

I don't know who the BRAT contact is for MN - and if they have any screened homes but this volunteer group could use some help - they have turned down several homes. I offered to visit and evaluate the dogs - and/or evaluate prospective adoptors which is all I can do at this moment. so we'll see if they call me.

I just can't take in any - have little puppies - lots of them here.

    Keep you posted.

NOTE - they are committed that the new home HAS to have a fence - they have turned down a home with a small child.

  • I heard from the humane society and am in the process of filling out an application. Next step, if I'm approved, is to find transport. Any suggestions?
The humane society and I do not believe in transporting via airlines.

I own two female Basenjis…have a fenced yard! Keep your fingers crossed for me.

  • I, unfortunately, would not be able to house the mentioned Basenji, but I do live less than 10-15 minutes from the location. In case anyone needed someone to check him out.

You can send an email here: brat-admin@lists.basenjirescue.org and they will get you in contact with the local area person to help get the dog(s) out of the shelter.

I just helped from Oklahoma get one out of shelter in Georgia as my friend contacted me about one in her local shelter.

I'll check back here to this post, let me know if you don't here anything and I'll send out an email, I'm a BRAT volunteer

  • Rocky is not at the shelter, he is in a foster home.

I'm submitting an adoption application to the humane society's coordinator per her instructions.

  • Houston
