It definitely felt like I aged 10 years in a few minutes this am. I must have looked like a complete crazy person. My neighbors don't know me because I moved up here mid-winter, and only recently has it warmed up enough for chance encounters with neighbors outside. I went running outside at 10:30 am with 2 leashes, 1 dog, a sample bag of cat food, wearing Christmas themed pj pants, a bright yellow Georgia Tech hoodie sweatshirt, no glasses so i can't see, randomly shouting "HAVE YOU SEEN A LITTLE DOG RUNNING AROUND!" at my neighbors.
Both of my girls are microchipped. I know there is a lot of debate about collars. I fear, especially with the martingale style, that mine will strangle themselves if they get caught on something when I'm not around. In this case, I'm glad Callie didn't have a collar on because the rungs on the porch are so close together, she may have caught the collar without realizing it & jumped & hung herself. I do worry that they will get out & somebody will find them but not know to check for a microchip, but even dogs with collars can lose them while running around loose. So I don't think there is a right or wrong answer for when to collar them. Mine don't usually dart out of doors, so I don't worry about it too often.
As for the porch; that will not be accessible to them if I can not supervise them from now on. Fortunately I will only be here for a couple more weeks, so I won't worry about adding chicken wire or anything. I'm already saving up for a basenji proof fence for the new house though. Callie is quite the escape artist when she has motivation (clearly!)

I have never heard of them but I will have to check them out!

I just discovered August Magic but haven't read it yet - now I'll add Heart of Savannah to my library list. Thanks for the tip.

OMG…I just looked for these on line. They are out of print and I can get one at about $11.00, but the other is listed at about $185.00. My local libraries don't carry it either. Any suggestions? Looking for a unique Xmas gift for my daughter.

I think "Andrew" (Carrie) just got August Magic for her bday. Maybe she'll give us a review when she reads it. I wonder if she knows where her mom got it…

I just saw August Magic on Amazon.

Are you sure they are out of print? Check direct from the supplier at http://www.basenjimagic.com/. The order form comes up just fine there.

I did indeed read it while in England…. cried the ENTIRE book. Literally. I was just bawling on the crowded commuter train during rush hour from York to Manchester England. Very quick, easy read, but very sweet. It made me miss my kids 10x more than I already did & it made me feel so fortunate to have two of my very own. I highly recommend it. And I'm pretty positive my mom got it from Amazon.
Now I have to go buy the Savannah one....

I wanted to buy a couple of copies each for gifts. I found August Magic on Amazon. Could only find expensive used copies of Heart of Savannah. I've contacted Windigo Harbor Media, the publisher, a couple of times to see if the still have copies for sale with no reply. While you can get an order form from their website I'm not sure it is an active site since there is no response. I don't want to send a check unless I know someone will receive it and send the merchandise.

Very sweet book - not a literary miracle, but such a sweet story. The way the Basenji speaks to his owner, though, is very like the way my guys let me know what they need without words. I really think Basenjis are incredibly expressive - not such a stretch to imagine them actually communicating in English, if only through our minds.

I read August Magic and was crying on page 2. But it is a great story. Anyone with a basenji (or any dog) will love it. You can also buy the cutest basenji plush toy from the website. Great gift. http://www.basenjimagic.com/plush.htm
