A New Appreciation Of My Basenjis

Basenji Talk
  • I have a new appreciation of just how wonderful my basenjis are after spending the last two days and still having one more to go dog sitting my mom's basenjis. My dogs are in no way perfect and taking care of four dogs by yourself is always a task but I can really appreciate how well my dogs respond to me. It is the little things like getting the hint to not walk behind me and tie me up when I am walking two at a time and that though my dogs often forget themselves and walk on a tight leash they long ago gave up true pulling except at lure trials. I can also really appreciate that I do not have a resource gaurder in my house. I can not wait to go home and cuddle my sweeties.

  • I pet set my friends b's and its the same there…MY 2 are angels...

  • So so true Lisa!!! What a difference it makes.

The only problem is now I have to convince my family that even though the dogs seem great they are not the same easy going trustworthy dog that their schnauzer is! grrrr

@kianakenney Congratulations on your new pup! Nala is a cutie! It’d be interested to know her genetic make-up......I don’t have any guesses. Enjoy her - she is precious.

She's very cute. Congratulations. Keep in mind that Basenjis are not that common, which means a Basenji mix would not be that common. That said, the down ears don't necessarily mean anything unless they're never up, and the ears are up in the other shot. So it's possible. The markings are definitely right. As suggested, if you really want to know a DNA test will be a lot better than guesses.

Well I will tell you a couple of differences - walking basenjis you typically have 1 boy one girl - and stay away from other dogs. I can walk 2 or 3 bigs and 1 little and they just walk along - not as dog aggressive as some basenjis can be - still as food aggressive. Similar play styles - butt up. Since the basenjis at my house a Seniors - once the bigs get BIG I don't usually let them play together because a 2 year old big anything and a 10 or 15 year old anything not a good combination. The hardest thing to get used to was - they bark. They are VERY attentive to everything outside of the yard when they are out and need to alert me. A 57 lb dog in your lap is heavier than a 20 lb dog and takes up more space. Like basenjis I have some that are on your lap, some right next to you and some within arms length in case you drop something. Like basenjis - they are a female led group BUT they don't seem to have to have that continuous discussion with each other on who is in charge.
