New puppy owner help please

Basenji Puppy Pen
  • Hi I am new to the forum and owning basenjis. We have done quite a bit of research, but nothing beats practical experience.

My question is long so I apologize up front.

We get our new puppy Saturday. Our breeders feed the puppies Meunsters puppy food. We decided to at least start off with that brand since it is what the little guy is used to eating. The problem is that brand of food is only sold in TX, LA, and OK. In other words it is only available is places no where near us. lol (We live in Northeast AR). We are having the breeder bring a bag with them when we meet to get the puppy. I have lurked and read on the boards but really am not sure what brand to try changing him to once that is finished. The brands that we are leaning toward are Innova Evo, Timberwolf, and Merrick.

I know that each dog is different and most people really believe in what they give their pets so what is your opinion?

    Thanks in advance.

  • The ones you list are good foods.
Also good is Natural Balance, like the Potato and Duck (or any of the Potato & ______) or California Natural is a good food

But you want to start mixing it pretty early on…. and looking at the Meunsters food, I would not feed that... way to many gains and useless ones like Beet Pulp, no value, just a filler.... corn, many Basenjis and many other breeder have allergies to corn or develop them after being fed corn for a few years. My Kristii did... Chicken Meal, not a good source of protein. If you read the ingredients, there is no single meat source, only "meal". So I would want to get the pup off that food pretty quickly (again, in my opinion)

  • The Whole Dog Journal just published their list of Approved Dry Foods. You have subscribe to get the article but they are a great resource and definately worth the subscription price.

Hi everyone! New Basenji owner here from Melbourne, Australia. I know this topic is a couple of months old but I thought I'd just add my experience for anyone else needing help with puppy biting. My wife and I had been having mouthing/biting trouble with our (now) 12-week old pup for the last week. The behavior has improved almost instantly by following the advice in this video. She's still pretty mouthy but it doesn't escalate the way it did before when we'd try and stop her from doing it/yelping/saying '"NO". I think everything we were doing was just turning it into the funnest game ever for her! https://youtu.be/bd1Q56Mfp4M

@basenji_life The vet can manipulate to see if something severe is wrong, but hips xrays need to wait til 6 mos (OFA) or (I think.. too tired to look) 4 mos.. oh heck I have to look.. "The PennHIP method can be reliably performed on a dog as young as 16 weeks old."

Sophie is really cute and Thanks for the replies. I THINK we have decided on going with the name Amirah. Prairieland's Arabian Princess as her registered name. Amirah means princess in arabic. :) I appreciate all the help with the names. and if we decide a different route i will repost it. Thanks again!!

Sophie is one who definately thinks that the standard reads "a goof with strangers". She loves meeting and greeting people and dogs though she has learned how to be dog appropriate and is not a push over. She wags her tail so much it is no wonder is is only a loose single curl, how could it be anything else with it in constant motion. We do a lot to socialize all of our pups so they are outgoing and confident but there is a definate distinction between some of our pups who would probably be considered "Aloof" though they are friendly and like attention from strangers, they always make you feel like you are attending court for royalty and Sophie whose dream job would probably be a greeter for WalMart.
