Minnesota - Lure Coursing Fun Run

Basenji Training
  • That is fantastic! I can't wait to meet you both! If you need more info wizard send me an email. I am excited!!

  • Ops, forgot kananga on the last post. If you want more info shoot me a post on my personal page and I will get you my email addy. :-)

  • I look forward to it. Sounds like I better prep my boy with some thorough exercise over the next 2 weeks.

  • Definitely! As you don't want him to pull or injur himself from over doing it that day.

I don't 'train' my dog rather we just talk daily walks (3 per day) and closer to racing season I do sprints with him – he loves racing me and of coarse ALWAYS beats me!

  • Hopefully the weather cooperates on Saturday. Will they still do runs if it starts to rain?

  • In most cases yes, they will still have the event even in the rain.

  • Fair enough. Kananga does not mind the rain. :D

  • If it rains they will still course but it will depend on how hard it is raining. The latest weather update I heard today stated it was not suppose to rain until Saturday evening so lets just hope it holds out so we have a beautiful sunny 60 degree day!

  • Just wanted to remind anyone who is coming tomorrow to bring two leads as you will need one when releasing and one for the person catching your B if you are doing straight racing. I will bring extra just in case!

  • @ljsabo:

I'll be sure to bring an extra. Anything else recommended that I bring?

It'll be interesting to see how my B does once I get there. I have to give him some Benadryl before we leave in the morning (most likely an hour before) so he doesn't get upset from the car ride. Last time I took him on a longer drive he wasn't feeling too well. My vet recommended a low dose to help make him sleep on the drive. Otherwise I'm afraid he won't be eager to do anything from feeling sick. That's what happened when I took him to the dog park the other week.

So I'm hoping he'll be OK energy-wise once we arrive.

  • Bring a chair to sit in (as there will be a long waiting period in between runs), a crate for your B to hang out when you aren't running or walking around, snacks, plenty of water for you and your B and you should be all set!

I will be in a black Toyota FJ Cruiser so if you see my truck you can park by me.

Yay glad to see some more local interest! As far as training, there is a group called SONG (Sighthounds of North Georgia) that does informal practices once a month or so depending on man power & weather. These practices are a great way to introduce a new dog to the lure. However, for most dogs its an instinctual thing & they don't need much training. Lola & Callie both caught on to it their first time. I just let them both watch other dogs doing it first, then let them go & they did their thing. Website for SONG: http://www.nghounds.info/index_files/Page430.htm It doesn't get updated frequently, but go to the lure coursing practice tab, scroll to the bottom & there are instructions to get on the e-mail list for upcoming practices. Hope to see you lure coursing soon!

@Tayda_Lenny: Yes! There's one this weekend in North Branch…. are you going to go? Would be great if we could meet up and help each other through it. http://www.iwags.org/coursing.html I'm going to call the people and find out how to enter them… If you B has never run, then you need to do practice first… and if ASFA Trial they need to be certified and AKC then need a JC certificate before they can run. Some ASFA trials have "singles" that you can enter in and they run by themselved. Also even if your B has run before, but not with you as handler, I would still suggest that you go, see what a trial is all about etc... and just do practice until you are comfortable that you can catch your B at the end of the course

@lvoss: In order to get a JC your dog does not need to run with another dog. A JC is earned by your dog running the course by itself. It must pass 2 JC tests to earn the title. To certify a dog for ASFA the dog must run with another dog and show that it will not interfere. D'oh! I got the two mixed up :) But that's what I meant, lol…. Most of the lure trials we attended were ASFA trials....I think we did do practice runs at ONE AKC trial, but Jibini was less than 1 year old so I am pretty sure thats why we never did a JC "qualifying" run. I'm tempted to get back into it now that I have my own "pair".....but it always seems money is an issue that makes a 300-400 mile weekend jaunt a bit out of reach!! I also found it disheartening that there were so few Basenjis entered in Florida lure courses, and among those I met, nobody had dogs who could run with a strange dog. However, I enjoyed the time I spent at Lure trials and letting Jibini run....it was fun, even if we didn't get any "alphabet soup" for Jibini's name!!! Defintely an experience well worth it :)
