My Very Clever Girl…

Basenji Talk
  • That story reminds me of something our girl did when she was a pup ( which was 17 years ago ) . Seshie was probably about 6 months old at the time . I was in the Living Room doing something I thought was important and heard a scuffling sound in the kitchen . I ignored it - not always a wise thing for a basenji owner to do . I heard the sound again and called for Seshie , but didn't go check it out . More scuffling . Just as I was about to get up , here she comes trotting into the living room with her water bowl in her mouth . She prances over to the couch , throws the bowl at my feet , sits down and looks up at me like " I believe you are being remiss in your duties Mom.Get with the program " I couldn't believe it !! From that point on , any time we heard the bowls being pushed around we knew we needed to fill the water . How smart are these little boogers ??!!!

  • Mine do something similar. Except for the empty thing. Low or dirty water warrants the same response. Nothing better than mopping up because there was a piece of kibble floating in their otherwise pristine water.

They'll roll in cow feces, but won't eat soggy kibble?

  • Gossy hasn't ever done that with her water bowl but has with her food dish.
When she's hungry she'll nudge it and paw it until she can get it turned over then grabs it and THROWS it at me. :D

Hah. My B loves to throw things at me. :D

  • Smart little girl….....

(sorry I have to say it....it's practically bursting from me....based on an older thread......)

....but can she fix a sump pump:D

  • @snorky998:

    ….but can she fix a sump pump:D

    :D :D Too funny..

  • Ours also nudge their bowls when they want more water. We have 2 bowls with water at all times, one on the first floor and one on the thrid floor. We have a front porch off teh second floor that they love to lie in the sun on and when the weather is right we will put a bowl there as well. Since a couple are on hard tile floors they make a huge racket when they are shoved around. They will even pick them up and move them so they slam down and I think they might break. We have found the bowl several feet away when we did not come in time.

  • OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Here I was thinking I just might have the very smartest B in the world, and it all sounds like its just common B behavior :):):). Bugger…

    snorky 998,

I read that thread, no she cant fix a sump pump, but, Im working on it :D

  • Basenjis will never be able fix a sump pump…. they need opposable digits.

  • Hahahaha!!!!!

  • The way those little feet can grasp and manipulate things, it's almost as if they do have a psuedo thumb (like pandas).:)

Opposable thumbs are often related to species that are considered to have a higher order of thinking. Those of us here that have ever said "How the h*** did the dog(s) do that!!" may secretly think they just hide their thumbs till we're not looking :D.

Higher order of thinking? Who knows. Prankster order of thinking? Absolutely!!

Sorry, but I believe that dogs' health should come first. I understand the dilemma that it puts shelters and rescue agencies in, but in general I believe if you can't handle having intact dogs don't get them. Full stop. The more research that is done the more clear it is that we hurt dogs by neutering them. Yes it is annoying to keep a bitch safe once or twice a year when it is in heat, but if you aren't willing to do that why would you get it? Nor should his health suffer because you chose to get a bitch and seem unsure of your ability to keep them separated. I really wish people asked this question before adding an intact dog to their family. The next question is whether you are willing to keep them apart and want help with ideas on how to make it as peceful as possible. Having lived with a male dog that howled the entire time we had a bitch in heat, I can only say that it isn't Fun but it is doable. You can do this!

Heidi might be allergic to penicillin. It might be an idea to contact the breeder and find out about the medical history of Heidi's for-bearers. For a long time after I got Mister Two Dicks, he would throw up for what I though was no reason. I would give him dry food, he would throw up. I would give him canned food, he would throw up. I would give him beef bones, he would throw up. After much complaining to his breeder and others, it suddenly dawned on his breeder that Mister Two Dicks' grandfather was allergic to beef. Ever since, no beef, no throw ups. It could be that Heidi is allergic to something and it is hereditary. Just a thought.

@Elysium: That's what I wanted to say :D Happy birthday from Germany, too! Cute, sharing the birthday with your dog ;) Yes, I like to tease Rebecca that is how I can remember her birthday – because it's Jazzy's birthday too. LOL Keoki turns 3 on the 17th. My pups are growing up on me!

@lvoss: Have you been counting days since she went in? Also, Walmart has $4 fleece throw blankets that you can use on your furniture for her to lay on as a compromise to britches. If you are really lucky you may be able to find them at Big Lots for as low as $2.50 I'd second what lvoss says about fleece - my pup is in heat as well although we're 10 days further in (Liyah started on the 8th) than you are :D. I found a bolt of fleece in Walmart's remnants section this week - cut 3 throws from it - actually thicker than the pre-made throws. The bolt cost 2.84 - quite a deal!
