@debradownsouth Thank you for the kind words but I have to admit... I take young adults for my own convenience. I simply don't have time, stamina or energy to deal with the pups as adorable as they are. Having a puppy is like having a baby or too! Did I mention I was not into children and babies or can you guess?lol. I love the retirees. they are already used to crates (although Ollie is now somewhat recalcitrant about getting into hers because she would rather hang out with her now "Mom", lol!! They travel well. They are usually somewhat used to people. Ollie is not used to playing by herself and is just getting used to "big" breeds. She doesn't get the commands "sit, down or stay" yet but we are working on it. She is the champ of the "heel" command however!!

Hey everyone
I have a 4 month old Basenji named Ripley. He is my first Basenji, so I'm going to need lots of advice!
Right now I'm working on getting him house broken and to stop eating EVERYTHING he sees! If anyone has any tips, let me know!

Welcome, hope to see pictures soon… and housetraining is a work in progress... and takes time and effort... you have to take them out lots!!! and eating everything he sees... typically for any puppy... need to keep a close eye on him and when he gets something he should not, "exchange" it for something he can chew. Who did your get your pup from if you care to share?

Welcome, you will find lots of good advice from this group.

Welcome! Sorry, I don't have any advice other than 'a tired puppy is a good puppy'! I always adopt 2-3 year old adults…because of all those things you mention. I love the name Ripley, by the way.

I got him from Mariah Akitas and Basenjis in Indy.
Thanks for the advice! I'll post a picture of him soon! -
Welcome to our pack. Get him as many toys as you can to help keep him occupied (the big floppy stuffed animals are good ones and the interactive toys).

Maria told me that he was guaranteed against Fanconi, and it says in the papers I got from her that he wouldn't have it. Should I have him tested anyway?
-
Though he will not get Faconi he may carry the gene for it which means he could produce offspring with the disease.
-
Thanks for the info. How would I go about getting him tested?
-
Go to www.basenjihealth.org all the details are there on how to test. You order the cheek swab from www.offa.org (price is 60.00)

Hello & welcome from Canada. Nice to have you here. 1 thing that might work with you for housetraining is having your pup leashed to you as much as possible throughout the day. May help? I read it somewhere that this works.
