What about ORIJEN????

  • Hi There,

My dog is half basenji and half shiba inu. She has tried wellness and does not eat it. I have tried a new product called ORIJEN. It is considered high in protein equivalent to EVO which is 42% protein. I know that basenji's are at risk for falcones disease so i wonder if the high protein will be hard on my dog's kidneys. It is a grain free diet and it apparently one of the top products out for dry kibble. I was hoping to get some ideas on what others think of it. She loves it so much that when i mixed it with her wellness..she picked out all the Orijen and left the wellness behind.

Thanks so much for any help in this!!!

  • Orijen is a baked raw food. It's about as close you can get to raw without being raw. My boxer is on it and loves it. It is a good food.

Many of us feed meat based only… and the high protein would have no effect unless your B developes Fanconi... since it is a recessive gene, I would not think that you have to worry with a Shiba cross. There are lots of different opinions about high protein period and feeding dogs... from many different experts... we all just need to do our homework and decide what is best for our kids.

Would love to see pictures... many of us that show kid that a Shiba is a Basenji with hair and Shiba people say a Basenji is a Shiba without hair!

  • Orijen is fantastic, feed my dogs on it and they are in fab condition, highly recommend it!!

  • Hey Pat…i posted up a pic of my little "SHIBENJI"....click on my profile ..she has more wrinkles in her forehead since she is shedding right now..and she is less fluffy so she looks more basenji..it's funny though..when she is with the basenji's she looks like a shiba..when she is with a shiba..she looks like a basenji..i just think she looks like herself!!

  • Faita, are you the one that lives in Little Italy with the sweet Shibenji?

  • Orijen is great Myran thrives on it ,coat is so shiny and muscles ripple under his skin ;)Efia well there´s another story she does well on it apart from gaining too much weight it has taken some time to get it right and I had to cut down on her feed she needs much less with Orijen.

  • yup..catt..it's us…thanks for the email!! our dogs will have to meet up sometime!!

  • Thank you everyone for all of your wealth of expertise and experience. It was extremely helpful. We are going to try origen out and i'll keep you all posted. Thanks again!!

  • We switched from Blue Buffalo to EVO to Orijen last year trying to find something that worked for the dogs. Miles got a little fat on Orijen Red Bites - I think he liked it a little too much! ;) We've since switched to the "senior" formula with reduced calories and both my dogs look great!!

  • I found Zina put on the weight quickly too and had to cut back, but it's still, IMO, an excellent food.

Not sure how Xylitol is being marketed. It is an alcohol found in a lot of plants, including birch wood, which is the source of Xylitol used in medicines. And it is toxic to dogs, even in small amounts. Most of the time you find it in sugarless gum and candy. Here is an FDA warning "Paws Off Xylitol": https://www.fda.gov/consumers/consumer-updates/paws-xylitol-its-dangerous-dogs

Hello, I recommend reading: Early Kidney Disease - Difficulty Getting Her to Eat at https://basenjiforums.com/topic/15616/early-kidney-disease-difficulty-getting-her-to-eat/13 What may guide your path: Kidney values relative to normal. Is there proteinurea? For homemade, read DogAware and accompanying websites. Good luck!

Thank you everybody so much! I appreciate all the info. I had some vanilla Breyer's all natural and gave my guy a taste of that... boy does he seem to think that's a great treat! Obviously, though I don't want that to be the only thing I do. I'm going to follow up with our vet on getting a draw for the full thyroid panel at hemopet once next pay check comes through. You were right he was only checked for T4. Thank again basenji forums! I was looking back at pics from when he was younger and weighed more. I think he's always been a bit taller than standard and had a little barrel chest. Used to call him a basenji bouncer at the dog park. He was all about playing with the labs, pits and other big dogs - probably because he knew he could outrun them if they ever got too rough. He's much more about slow walks with me and lap snuggles these days ❤

8 mos old is still on Royal Canine medium size puppy as recommended by vet. Very interested in how you change up their food. Glad to hear that because I would like to change him from chicken based to something else as adult. Had always been advised not to keep changing food as it was hard on their system. Breeder advised to use high protein and fat dog food (60% protein, 30% fat). What is your opinion on this? I am starting to add 1/2 tsp coconut oil daily to dog food for winter feeding. Advised it had ingredients similar to mother's milk. What say you about this?
