Gift Exchange: Basenji Buddies Summer 2008

Basenji Talk
  • I wait for one more little detail and send off by maybe Thursday. I am curious how long the post will take….

    Regards,
    Esther

  • I sent my package off yesterday.

  • We sent ours off today…should be to our B-buddy by Monday!

Jackpot got his box of goodies in the mail yesterday~! He LOVES the zebra stuffed animal and goes crazy every time it makes the whinny noise! What a fun gift :-) He was also VERY excited about the red chicken stick things...boy does he love those, he could smell them through the box and kept pawing at the box before we got it opened! The collar is VERY cool. Thanks for all of the presents!

I've attached a few pictures of Jackpot with his new favorite toy.

  • Awh awesome! I'm so glad Jackpot recieved his gift! I didn't have Jackpot, but it's good to see that our Basenji Buddy plan worked out!

I sent my package out today, my b-buddy should be getting it sometime early next week!

  • Woo hoo!!!! Zaire FINALY finished her package for our Basenji buddy. I can't wait to brave to post office tomorrow and send it out….. This really was a GREAT idea.

Just as a funny side note, When we went shopping I had Zaire with me. The woman at one of the little shops we went to (read as "I am blessed to live in Oregon where we have way too many cute little dog specialty shops") Fealt bad that Zaire wasn't getting any of the toys we were buying, so she gave zaire some lamb jerky so she wouldn't feel neglected. :D

  • Hahahaha, that's too funny; I bet Zaire was happy :)

I understand this all too well. I work in a dog bakery and Shango comes to work with me. Everyone comes in and he plays the role so well- "Oh! He's not getting any treats? Can I buy one for him?" Hahahahhaha he's such a lucky dog on days we work!

  • I am sure he never gets any treats from his Daddy, haha!!!!

  • My basenji buddy gifts were shipped out today!

As a side note, the place I shipped from wouldn't let me add any notes to the package. Sooo…I will just explain the gifts Dallas sent on here after my buddy has received them :) I don't want to ruin the surprise beforehand!

  • We got ours today. I got a Navy pen and bumper sticker, and Medjai got some great new nylabones, cookies, plush ball, and some other great odds and ends. There was also a great little booklet that came with the package written by Medjai's basenji buddy.

I have found one problem with this package. It make mine seem so small, as I didn't send that much or with a cute little note, but Medjai's new buddy should love their package as much as Medjai loves those types of things.

  • Please post some photos!

  • Our package arrived the other day from Florida. In addition to some delicious goodies, EL D received a new collar (I especially like the little allegators) …

  • don't worry, I am also a bit late. Beegin loves Post-its? interesting B-hobby…

    regards,

  • MacPack (Topper, Eddie & Nicky) got their gifts today, woo-hoo!
Great stuffed toys (snatched from my hands immediately!), pizzle sticks, and really yummy dog treats…lots and lots to last a long time (or one day if Eddie had his druthers). And a treat for the humans too, thanks Wizard!

  • THis is really a lot of fun – I've enjoyed reading what others have received.
Pity the poor folks who couldn't participate. :p

  • We are preparing for the Winter Holidays Basenji Buddies Gift Exchange. Details to follow in another thread.

  • I'm excited to do this again!

Shango and I sent ours out a few days ago so we're anxiously waiting until our basenji buddy gets their package,

Shango hasn't recieved his gift yet so we're anxiously waiting for that too! We look forward to come home and find a package on the door step. We can't wait!

Last I heard, the Breed Club secretaries had more people waiting or wanting pups than were available . You could get on a list for a Basenji next winter but I very much doubt you will find one still unsold. Go to the website of the BCGB, or the Northern Basenji Society as you are in the North and you will find email addresses of the secretaries. They will put you in touch with breeders who may be planning a litter for puppies to become ready to leave the nest in about a year's time. Its a long wait I know, but you have most probably missed the boat for now. You are welcome to post me privately. Good luck!

Where I am it costs about $2K+ for a dog from a breeder for just about any breed. Goldens may be less because the litters are so large. That may seem like a lot, but, as Debra mentions, dogs cost money to care for. After vet bills and boarding fees and food, it matters little what the dog cost to acquire. Leaving true puppy mills out of the discussion, given the costs of being a responsible breeder -- testing, vet bills, feeding -- and how much work breeding is, I can't imagine anyone doing it for the money. That leads to two problems for people looking for dogs. One is that since breeding isn't really lucrative, there aren't a ton of breeders, which means the supply of pups is low. Second is that most Basenji breeders want to place their pups in the best possible homes -- remember they aren't doing it for the money -- which means they're looking for people who have had Basenjis before. Something of a Catch-22.

@Thana: she does have basenji characteristics then apart from her colours and looks.- i also think she must have some basenji blood! She is lovely and lucky no matter what! adorable little face:))))) Having read about the characteristics I think she does. The lady with the basenji that we met also commented on some of the things she was doing as "very basenji" (eg. standing on her back legs so she could see what was going on). Has a lovely wrinkly forehead too. Got very frustrated with me earlier and did her funny bark, more of a wierd howl really. She is def one of a kind. Its a shame we have to have her spayed (not that I could ever justify letting her have a litter).

My Rue is pretty perfect. She is mixed with something (I don't know what) so she doesn't look like a real B… and she isn't interested in anything in our house (chewing wise), doesn't bolt out the door, and licks like CRAZY! She also doesn't really like to play with other dogs at the dog park, she just smells them, occasionally chases them, then comes back and lays down by me (EXERCISE DANG IT!). The only normal B behaviors that I see in her are the little noises that she makes (she makes a lot of them for different reasons) and her BAROOOOOOO (which is fitting because we named her Rue before we even knew she was a Basenji) and it seems like she is stubborn about sitting. It's like she is saying, "yeah I know you want me to sit, but first I'm gonna spin around in a circle. Then maybe I'll sit if I feel like it." Haha! She is a character!

I have found that if I take my B to doggie daycare (even if it's only for half a day), she is ehausted when I bring her home. She will let me do the dishes without any basenji help! She also tends to treat our doggie friends a little nicer when they come around. Having a worn out basenji is deifinitely worth the $15!!
