    My husband and I are taking our 6 month old Tri-color camping with us at the end of the month, our vet keeps telling us we should use some kind of flea/tick prevention. I have read a lot on different forums about the different kinds. I'm so afraid of making him sick, but on the other hand I want him protected while we are in the woods for a week. Can anybody help us with this situation?

    I've just started using Neem Oil products to repel fleas and ticks. It's totally natural although not sure yet just how effective it is as I've only been using it a few days. It doesn't smell too bad and the Bs don't seem to mind it. It seems to be helping with the dreaded Scottish Midges!!! LOL!! :)

    I've been camping with 2 Bs in a 4 man tent. I slept in one end, my husband in the other and the Bs slept in their crates in the middle. We had a great time! :)

    I've taken my previous beasties with no problems - Gossy will be going on her first camping trip at the end of this month. I use the flea/tick medication my vet sells (can't remember the name at the moment) that you squirt between the shoulders. But I always do tick checks daily when camping before we go into the tent for the night (good thing they have such short hair).
    I always keep the dog in the tent with me (too many wild animals during the night) and I usually use a child's sleeping bag or old fleece blanket for the dog to sleep on/in.

    We are bringing his bed and a fleece blanket to wrap up in. Wizard, you don't remember the name of the medication. We were thinking about using Frontline. Did your B have any reaction to it?

    I wouldn't go with the chemical stuff. Better go with the natural and continually check them. Bring a flea comb. I've used the flea comb daily for years and it works great.

    This is the recipe of a herbal flea repellent taken from the "Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats" by Dr. Pitcairn :
    "Combine one part each of as many of these powdered herbs as you can find:

    • eucalyptus
    • rosemary
    • fennel
    • yellow dock
    • wormwood
    • rue

    Put the mixture in a jar; apply sparingly to the coat by brushing backward with your hand or the comb and sprinkling it into the base of the hairs on the neck, back and belly. Use several times a week."
    It smells good and … it's natural !:D

    I too used frontline on my Basenji with no problems, i think it prevents ticks as well.
    I do like the sound of natural products and would consider using them when i get another.

    I alternate between Frontline and Advantix (especially when we vacation in the woods…ticks!) in the summer when insects are very bad, but I only apply it about every 6 weeks unless I see fleas...and we flea comb often. Never had any problems with it and Topper can't stand neem or anything with eucalyptus.

    From what I read is his book, this herbal mixture for fleas should also be effective against ticks … Apparently they hate the smell of Eucalyptus as some commercial formulas also use it !:eek:
    And ticks are not permanent residents: they suck blood and later fall off to lay their eggs. I suggest you check your animal on a daily base, also making use of a flea comb and a pair of tweezers. This should do the job.;)

    Advantix is what my vet sold and we had no problems. I have also tried Biospot as that had more "natural" products in it - it worked okay too. We have the lyme ticks here (the super small ones) so I have to check carefully - even just in the backyard.

    We live in Florida - have used Advantage on all our cats (we've had many through the years) and on our dogs - never have a problem. Seems to be working fine on Shaye too.

Someone there all the time, proper attention to training, not just leaving the dog alone, especially not as a puppy. btw, he won't bark at all. As you would know if you had really researched the breed. He will cry and scream but not bark ! No. At least you are asking questions but I really think you should find another breed.

    Last I heard, the Breed Club secretaries had more people waiting or wanting pups than were available . You could get on a list for a Basenji next winter but I very much doubt you will find one still unsold. Go to the website of the BCGB, or the Northern Basenji Society as you are in the North and you will find email addresses of the secretaries. They will put you in touch with breeders who may be planning a litter for puppies to become ready to leave the nest in about a year's time. Its a long wait I know, but you have most probably missed the boat for now. You are welcome to post me privately. Good luck!

    @ktiefen1 You would be correct!! Potty Training eventually came easy because ours is so treat motivated....lol. Basic obedience is a challenge for us......ahe is definitely her own girl....and please dont disturb her sleep. You could lose a limb. ::)))))

    old thread but posting up :) we take ours camping and she loves it of course :) biggest hassle is the whining and crying and hating the ride to the camp areas ! we use a cable over a leash but have a leash for walks and have her in a harness all but at night when she sleeps we tent camp so we picked her up a fuzzy jacket to wear at night and we run a small tent heater also so she stays nice and warm lots of fleece blankets to cuddle up in she is sleeping in a soft crate ? and we keep thinking boy she is going to chew through that some night and want to join us ! hahaha reason we dont let her sleep with us camping is she has a thing for down and feathers and we all have down bags ! so we joke about waking up to a tent full of feathers if she did sleep with us ! we have watched her sit and pull feathers out of some feather pillows we have ! during the day we have a dog bed that folds and she seems to prefer sleeping in the dirt over the bed but with the needles this last trip she preferred the bed :) she also does love laying in the hammocks with us when we take a nap !     @phoenix3: Looks like a B to me but i think more of a B mix he looks like he has corse hair Maybe be has the size of a cattledog body and a basenji head :) My Aspen is a cattledog/ terrier mix he has the body of a cattledog {the colors} and the height and face of a terrier heres a pic so u can see the colors of the cattledog well one color anyways :D :D phoenix3 - this is Aspen? I'm so amazed at her spots, because my Daisy has spots like Aspens. We know her mother is pure R/W Basenji and she is thought her other half Beagle. One of her other litter mate moms thought Blue Healer (cattledog). But I subscribed to the Beagle. Daisy could be … Cattle Dog I suppose. She's bigger than Duke now at almost 9 months old. I will show her off soon on "Show Off" forum soon.
