    Whole Dog Journal did an article on raw green tripe a few months ago so I decided to order some and try it, and the article was right that dogs love it.

    Piper is absolutely crazy about it. If she gets one little smell of it even while it is fully frozen she gets all worked up. Normally she is almost completely silent but once I take some tripe out to let it thaw she becomes extremely vocal, whining, crying and making all kinds of other noises, all the while jumping and digging on the door trying to get to it. Then when I feed her she devours her food unlike any other time. It’s the craziest I have ever seen her. And the best part is it’s supposed to be extremely good for them, and I’ve also heard it works really well to give medicine or to get a reluctant dog to eat.

    So we are very happy with the tripe and I’ll continue to use it to supplement her kibble occasionally.
    Has anyone else here ever tried it?

    Whatever you do don't heat it up in the microwave….... it smells to high heaven - at least the canned kind does....

    Yeah that is what I have heard. I've only used frozen tripe never canned, so I only thaw it out enough to cut off what I want then feed it to her still cold. It definitely has a unique smell, but luckily while it's frozen it isn't very strong.

    Where did you find the frozen tripe? I have heard of it, especially good for dogs with digestive issues, but have never tried it myself!

    I got my tripe from "A Place For Paws", http://www.aplaceforpaws.com/rawgreenuntr.html, but they only ship to states within a 2 day shipping radius.

    I think http://www.greentripe.com/ will ship anywhere in the country although I'm not sure how much it would cost, and there is also a 20 pound minimum order which was more than I wanted for one dog, however if you have multiple dogs it may not be too much. There is also a lot of really good information about tripe on this site.

    I'm sure there are other places that sell frozen tripe as well, but most that I've found don't ship it or will only ship it to places really close due to the shipping cost of shipping frozen products.

    You could also get freeze-dried tripe or canned tripe which could be shipped anywhere, and while it is probably not as good as fresh frozen tripe it will still provide many of the benefits.

    I bought a case of it. It comes in 2 pound frozen rolls with 15 rolls in a case. It is really economical when purchased by the case and works out to around $2.50ish per roll.

And doodle will grab it up before I have any idea it's there! I wish I had a picture of the day she pulled a (whole) bagel out of a bush!

    Thank you everybody so much! I appreciate all the info. I had some vanilla Breyer's all natural and gave my guy a taste of that... boy does he seem to think that's a great treat! Obviously, though I don't want that to be the only thing I do. I'm going to follow up with our vet on getting a draw for the full thyroid panel at hemopet once next pay check comes through. You were right he was only checked for T4. Thank again basenji forums! I was looking back at pics from when he was younger and weighed more. I think he's always been a bit taller than standard and had a little barrel chest. Used to call him a basenji bouncer at the dog park. He was all about playing with the labs, pits and other big dogs - probably because he knew he could outrun them if they ever got too rough. He's much more about slow walks with me and lap snuggles these days ❤

    I would find out what he scared of or what he dislikes about the car. Is it the car itself, the sensation of being closed in, the movement when the car is being driven? Then work on whatever the problem is, with food. As for food, I use raw duck and vegetables. And I hand-feed all meals, so I never have a problem with not eating/partially eating. I would also recommend hand-feeding for anyone who does have a dog with food issues. Shredded chicken is good (as long as he doesn't have any reactions). But that and some kibble isn't a balanced meal. You may wish to look into a vitamin supplement, specifically something that has a focus on omega 3 (since chicken is high in omega 6), Vitamin C & the B vitamins (because if all he's eating is chicken and kibble, where is his source of vitamin C and the B vitamins?), zinc & copper (same reasons). All the best. EDIT: I just realized this thread is a year old and was bumped by what is almost certainly a bot.

    My sister only feeds her dogs their kibble. Period. She says that the dogs like and eat it, and her dogs have always had VERY long lives…most living past 15 years. It is her theory that dogs don't really crave the variety of foods that humans do and the kibble has all the nutrients that they need. Whether this is true or not for Basenjis is subject for debate but the fact that her dogs live so long does carry some merit. My wife gives our B way more table food than I would like and sometimes the dog has adverse affects from certain types of table food even though it is all natural. I personally don't feel that the dogs needs that much variety. So, I guess you could try it but I'm not sure if it would be very beneficial.
