Akila's mom

Member Introductions
  • Hi, After owning Moxie for 17 years, I am finally a new mom of akila. She was born 1-26-08 and is a red & white. She may be a basenji like Moxie, but she is very unique in character.

I have a problem that I have not run into before…she seems to be suffering from seperation anxiety. She is fine until I go outside and then she cries and scatches. I ignore her, hoping she will settle down but so far she is wearing herself out wanting to be with me all the time.

    Any suggestions?

    thanks, Jackie

  • Be patient and give her some time. It may take some time but she'll get more comfortable. When she does not act anxious give her a treat and commend her for being a good girl. Take an obedience class with her to build confidence.

  • Where did you get her? Do you know what her living arrangements were with the breeder? Or have you talked to the breeder? The more you know about she before you got her can give you clues about why maybe they might have different problems.

  • I wish I can help with your question. Our little boy, Otis seems to be doing Ok on that front and I contribute that to the fact that we have two other dogs. He is crated if we are not home, but the other dogs are in the same room as him, so he won't be lonely.
Have you maybe tried to let her have something that smells like you, like a stuffed animal or an old tshirt that you have slept with for a few days.
Either way I want to wish you welcome to the forum and wish you good luck with Akila.

  • Welcome to the forum!

You can try to train her and make the time youre gone longer.
From 1 minute to what you want, so she will understand you would never leave her and eventually come back home.
Just wait outside the door and come in when she's silent.
If she keeps yelling and screamin, bounce softly against the window (or door, or someting else) so she stops making noice to listen what happens and you can get in.
If you get back when she's screaming, she may think you come back when she's screaming and will keep screaming (thats a lot of screaming!)

  • Yes, Buana's advice is the way - go outside (or even into another room with the door closed) for just a few seconds then come back and give attention and reward only if she's settled. Gradually increase the time you're gone but only give attention when she settles down.

  • My B went through a brief period of separation anxiety when we moved. He manged to do quit a bit of damage in the first two weeks of the move. The first time I left was the worst. It took some time and patience but we made it through. He was not left alone for the first week and then I slowly left for short periods of time. I found that he seemed more stressed if I stood outside and he could hear where I was but not get to me. My landlord would listen to hear him when I left. She reported he would whimper and pace but would calm down within five minutes. My only concern still is that he will not eat unless I am home. Good luck!

  • Give Akila a couple of baby blankets to cuddle in along with a nice size stuffed animal that you two have played with and cuddle her in balnkets and hold her with them. This might help some for sure time will work. Have fun with new baby.

  • Welcome Jackie. The ideas about leaving Akila alone for a short time and then lengthening the time have worked in the past for us. The soft things with familiar smell also should help. One other trick we have tried is to leave a TV or radio on at low levels. Talk radio or TV seems to work, but not too loud!

Welcome back to the wonderful world of Basenjis

Hello again after a very long absence!! My 'chewing' boy now leaves his coat alone - his Mum (now spayed) wears his old hand-me-down coat, and he has his onw snazzy camoflage polar fleece jumper that I made. Can't possibly have it off thankyou!! His half-brother Jerry had his first coat on today - also a 'chewer' - we'll see if it is still on in the morning. Jerry's sister Chloe also got one on today after I managed to keep her still enough to pull it over her head!! Jerry is NOT allowed to touch it thank you!! @kiwir: The thing that annoys me is that he always wore a coat as a puppy - he's just turned 12 months now. But boys being boys, in the last few weeks he thought Mum had come back in season (she hadn't!) so in frustration he gradually chewed her coat - from the back forward - left the polar fleece around her shoulders and chest and neck. And the silly girl just let him - looking at him indulgently - "My boy" I tried making them without the polar neck (designed to stop chewing of the front) - or reinforced them with thick cotton tape - and that lasted a little longer. Now he just looks at me with those eyes saying "Hell, I'm freezing Mum!"

Welcome to you and Snicker. I'm pleased that you said 'accident' - it's definitely not Snicker's fault. If you follow the advice gicven by previous posters you'll very soon have the perfect housetrained Basenji. They are generally very clean little creatures and in my opinion are the easiest dog to housetrain.

@mauigirl: Okay I actually went and found the e-mail I sent in to order the collar. The collars are from Northwind Catalog. Their medium collar is adjustable from 10" to 16" On the first collar I ordered I requested that it be 3" smaller than the medium size (Zip, girl), and the second I ordered I asked it to be 2" smaller (Riley, boy, bigger). In hindsight the medium as is would have been fine. On both of our dogs the collars are adjusted to just about as big as they can go so 13" on Zip and 14" on Riley (his is snugger going over his head but still loose around his neck). And the allowance looks to be 3" (that extra loop in a martingale that make it instantaneously adjustable) Sorry that took me so long, I ended up staying at work til 1am that night! Thank you very, very much !! It's past midnight now so I'll check it in the morning. Greetz UPDATE : Yes, they are the right size !:D

Andrea - I want to thank you for recommending the obedience website. We have all begun a program of dog training - fun for the kids especially. We have her (and the Jack Russell mix) sitting before they are allowed out, and they must "stay!" sitting even when the door opens until they are given a command to "go!" Even if the cat is just outside the door taunting them with his wicked yellow eyes to chase him - they must sit and stay until told to go. And now, after a month of constant training from all of us - they do it. In fact, both now sit at the door before it even opens anticipating the command. We also have hand gestures for the verbal commands - probably not the conventional ones, but they work for us and the pooches. We've started working on "come" now - Kandy definately doesn't like it, but she is beginning to obey "come-sit" for her treats. No treat without obeying. She's smart and quick to learn, and so is Sammy, so we're having a good time with them. Well, we did until Sammy went into heat and began making us all nutty with her constant whining and alternate aggressive behavior (she and Kandy had some real loud and nasty tussles) I had little time for the internet, for all the extra work it caused and the lack of sleep! But she's nearly done with that, and both are returning to whatever poses for normal and are getting along again. We're so happy with the two of them, and Kandy is so unique and special. What a treasure - wierd noises that she makes and all! MamaofMany
