Good vet in Georgia

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • We currently take Booger & Lola to Pets Are People, Too purely because of convenience, but we do not like it. Everytime we go in there, they glance at our dogs & then start into a sales pitch for whatever product… not because our dogs would necessarily benefit from said product.
Can anybody recommend a good vet, preferably one with some basenji experience & knowledge? We are in Dunwoody, just north of Atlanta. We don't mind driving a few miles.

  • If you can e-mail me I may be able to help you with this.

  • Hi,

Eli_and_Me would you mind posting the vets info or a link to their website in this thread. It is public information and should be ok to disclose on the forum if it is a licensed vet.

Other forum visitors can greatly benefit from this information as well.

    Thank you,

  • Oh, sure….sorry I wasn't sure if it would be ok to post the info or not and I wanted to err on the side of caution.

We use Dr. Marie Lance who is with Heart of Gwinnett Animal Hospital. They used to be owned by the same people who own Pets are People Too but they aren't any more. Phone number is 770-923-7474.

Dr. Lance is 2 hours from us but we still use her for pretty much everything for the dogs. We do have a local vet for generic things like vaccinations or just in case it's something life threatening. (Then we'd just get the dog stabilized for the drive down.) She is an amazing vet and takes the time to listen to what you have to say and truly cares about animals.

  • I highly recommend the Cumberland Animal Clinic in Smyrna. I have known Dr. DeHaven for 20 years and Dr. Tison for 12 years. Between the numerous Basenjis I have had through the years and all the referrals I have sent their way, the veterinarians and staff have vast experience with the breed and better yet, they like the breed. I have not met the newest veterinarian though so I can't comment on her. If you go, tell them I sent you. ;)

  • Thank you Eli & Robyn. I will be trying to take the kids for a visit to both clinics & see what we think. I appreciate the leads.

  • We take Max to the Banfield in the Petsmart on Cobb Pkwy in Acworth. We have gone to many different veterinarians but only found two that we feel comfortable with. We have the Banfield insurance which really helps, but most importantly he is comfortable going there and we trust them. He has been there twice in the past couple of weeks getting a cyst removed. They call in between appointments to check on him and see if we have any concerns. We do not like all the Banfield clinics, in fact the one on 92 we did not like. Another good vet is Randy Esbeck at Sawnee Animal Clinic 770-887-1900. He is a Basenji specialist. It's in Cumming Georgia. It's just to far for us to go.

    Good Luck,
    Max's Mom (Emily)

As they say, it is not the place but the Vet that is working there…. so while many of the Banfield clinic might not be good, when you luck into a good Vet.. that makes the clinic... IMO

Sorry to hear that Oakley went though this, but I have to say thanks for posting about this. I use Xylitol for my own baking/sweetening while I'm dieting… looks like I'll only keep the Stevia in the house... in the highest cupboad!

Is there anyone out in the New Jersey area (or knows of a site that I can be directed to) who knows of any vets that have knowledge of Basenjis? We have a 4 month old Basenji and our breeder took her to the vet at 8 wks but she hasnt been to one since so I've been looking for a good vet for a standard visit and cant seem to find one who knows about Basenjis (well all the vets Ive talked to, act like they know about them but you can tell they've never had one as a patient ;0 Thanks for the help!

@Benkura: His brother is my other boy 'Cahnce' who is Clear. It's just Chance & Trouper are chalk and cheese and both have good to offer the breed. I did wonder whether neutering him would be beneficial or not. Wasn't sure if it might induce too much stress. However, I would have to stop showing him if I did that and he already has 1 CC. I would not worry about doing it now… only something to consider "IF" he starts showing symptoms.... When Jaadii came down with Fanconi it was before the DNA test was available, so no one knew until he started spilling sugar. He was fine 11 months out of the year, but during Basenji breeding season he was a mess... and that was a lot of stress on him... So being neutered was not stressful, it was NOT being neutered that was. That said, not all dogs are alike... each are different... just putting in what we found with Jaadii....

Though my dogs have not had a reaction to a vaccine, I tend to err on the side of caution when it comes to vaccines. I would rather give a benadryl to help prvent a reaction then wait and hope for the best. I say this because my cat had a severe vaccine reaction after his rabies shot. Within 20 minutes of the shot he was vomiting, the hair at the vaccination site fell out and the site became swollen. We had to rush him back to the vet to be treated for the reaction.
