Bumpy dogs?

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • 6 month old Bassit is in great health. We just got her checked out at the vet and all is well. This week though (about 3 days after we went to the vet…sigh) I noticed a little lump on her back by her tail. It doesn't hurt her at all, and it's not changing in size or anything. I'm going to get her checked out anyways, but I thought I'd ask...Are Basenjis prone to lumps like this? I know that certain breeds just seem to get them and they're nothing serious. If that were the case, at least it would arm me with a bit more information when I went to the vet.

    Thanks!

Just curious, but did she have her rabies shot and if so, is the bump possibly the site of where she had the vaccine? Brando got a bump on his leg where he had his rabies shot…but I kept massaging it and it went away in about 2 weeks.

  • The same thing happened to Gossy when she got the lyme vaccine - except the bump was tender when touched.

  • Keep an eye on it and let us know how it goes please.

  • My B.'s rabies vacs are always given sub q between the shoulder blades, although I understand it can also be given IM, typically in the thigh.

A lump in the area you describe doesn't fit a vac site IMO. As sharron said, keep an eye on it. If it bothers you or your dog, a quick vet visit is in order.

Good luck, and keep us informed.

  • Thanks everyone! Now I'm wracking my brain trying to remember where exactly her vaccines were. She got two in one day, and I preoccupied with holding her and giving her cookies! I keep rubbing it, and if anything, it seems a bit smaller, but I will absolutely let everyone know what happens next.

    Cheers

Oakley was on the Iams intestinal sensitivity formula because I tried taste of the wild ( of all kinds) and he was still having stool issues, combined with a puppy bout of giardia…he did well on it but I didn't feel good about the ingredients. From there I tried nature variety and he wasn't a fan. He has been sensative stool wise with many of the high quality foods so now we use Fromms and he is terrific. He loves all the varieties ( I mix two kinds at a time..one of their grain free versions with a grain version in order to get a reduced grain diet; stool issues if none or too much!) His weight is steady and his coat has never looked shinier, smoother of softer. Lastly, he loves the taste and I don't have to coax him to eat. I agree with not free feeding OR feeding from the same bowl. Since yours have issues (whether it's weight or sensitivity) knowing when they ate and controlling how much will allow you to better navigate around the health issues and possibly identify the cause of some as well!

@giza1: Heh, heh, inbread/purebread is a pet peeve of mine as well. That, and SPADE. It's not really my dog, I don't have inbread dogs, I got it from my genetics list (when I saw the title I thought that these people shouldn't be making that mistake). Go ahead, use it. Can you pull it off the forum or do I have to email it to you? HAHAHAHA I thought the exact same thing. I was like…WTF! People should not own dogs if they dont know how to spell things. lol SPADE is on my "list" And "inbread" and "purebread" I dont really like when you say "purebreed" either, to me its purebred. but maybe i am wrong on that, thats just how i am. hate it! lol but thats so funny tho! THANKS for sharing! super cute!

@Moth: Have you ever tried an obedience class? It might be a great place to start. It sounds like your dog is space guarding. http://ahimsadogtraining.com/blog/resource-guarding/ was just going through some old threads, and came across this one-Moth, I like your style and advice-esp this link!

@Schouiffy: I like the Ruff wear boots. http://www.ruffwear.com/Barkn-Boots-Grip-Trex?sc=2&category=11 They also have a all season boot. Lycia is weird then, she pretty much doesn't care what you put on her - that included her "panties" when she was in heat What size did you get your girl dog? The ones I just bought online only come up to Manah's big pad on her foot, they don't seem long enough…

I use the Life Abudance and alternate between Paula Newmans. My dogs love it. Their coats look great. I totally support both of those dog foods.
