Longtime member, not active. Had a basenji with the same diagnosis back in 2004. He took a tremendous amount of bicarb each day, his Fanconi was being well managed, but he started having seizures at night. Our vet gave us something to stop the seizure that we'd administer rectally. We kept track of the number of seizures and they started becoming more frequent, to about twice a week, if I recall. The final seizure he had he went temporarily blind and howled and howled and we knew that was it was time. I just sat on the floor with him and cried. A couple months later we looked at photos we had taken of him right before and he looked very, very tired. Very much the hardest thing we had ever done was to let him go across the Bridge, but after looking at those photos, we had done the right thing. Our vet had told us that it was possible he would have a seizure and not come out of it, and we certainly didn't want that.
Fanconi linked test in Europe

It is now possible for people in Europe to test their B without sending blood to America.. A company in Helsinki, Finland, does the Fanconi test as well.

Thnx ! I forwarded the link immediately to my breeder:)

If you read carefully, the company in Helsinki is NOT doing the test. They are prepping the DNA and taking care of shipping to the US for testing at the Missouri lab. You still MUST regsiter your dog with the Canine Phenome Project and complete the DNA submission form to send with your sample to this lab.

And the write up on the site is a bit misleading regarding the CPP site that is says you "should" register and it should say you "must" ….
I would be afraid that people will have samples sent in and never get results because they were not signed up on the CPP site

Yes, I have heared about that, but to be honest, I will send the blood samples directly to the US as it is not done in Finnland but they extract the genetic info and send it to America. So I can send the blood as well…. same time, even less expences....
