Upset Belly

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • I am a worried mommy! I have a female Basenji and I have just switched her food to Wellness from Eagles Pack. She has an upset belly and has been eating grass a lot. She is also tired more than usual. My dad said that he uses kay-o-pectate (sp?) on his coonhounds. Does that work with Basenji's? If so how much?

I am also worried because i have found 2 ticks on her. I use the Adams Plus spray and I am worried that she might have Lyme's Disease (I am kinda an overprotective Mommy but I just want her to have the best care). I have a friend that has it and its not fun. I am not sure if Lyme is popular in my area but I was thinking about getting her vaccinated for it. Should I be really worried or am I just over reacting??

  • As far as Lyme's, have you talked to your Vet to find out if it is in your area? And they can do blood tests for Lymes….

As far as the food, when did you switch? Did you do it slowly mixing the two for a week or two? Other then eating grass, what else is she doing? And "seems" tired?... is it maybe the weather? How old is she?

  • I did a check online and it said that there was almost no risk. I have just had her a month so I have not taken her to the vet yet. I am planning on doing it soon though…

I weened her off of her previous food for about 2 weeks. She really likes the Wellness better than what I was feeding her. She does have some loose stools since I have totally weened her off of the previous food. It started yesterday (a couple days after eating only the wellness). She does not seem tired all the time but she did not want to go on her second walk this morning (I took her on one at about 7:30 for about 20 minutes and then her Daddy went to take her on one at about 10). and just laid around in her room (she has taken over the guest bedroom). I am just trying to make sure that she is ok. I think I am going to go home during my lunch (even though I live 30 minutes away) and see if she is doing ok. Maybe she will even get to come to work with her Mommy!

  • IT does sound like something is going on.
    She shouldn't be that tired.
Do you have heartworm in your area?
I would get her vetted asap.
Sorry to ask about HW but that just popped into my head.

  • She is on Interceptor. Im going to go home during my lunch and give her a Pepto chewable. She was in her normal playing mode last night so I will check to see how she is after work. I am hoping that she was just tired from walking/playing hard last night!

How old is she? Where did you get her? Have you talked to her breeder?

If she were mine, I would NOT self medicate her until she has had a Vet visit…

    Again, how old is she?

  • I am glad she is feeling better.
Its awful when our b's are sick.

  • I do agree with Pat.
I would stop giving her human "stuff" and get her vetted.
Also, take a stool sample in to have it checked as well.
Do let us know how she is doing.

  • I got her from the American Basenji Rescue. I have e-mail Rebecca. I am not sure of her breeder. She is a year and a half. She did this last time when we weened her from the stuff that they were giving her. I am hoping that it is a freak incident and I am going to go home in about 1/2 an hour and check on her. If she is not feeling well the office I plan on taking her to is open 7-7 so I can take her tonight or early tomorrow morning. Thanks for all the advice!

  • Do let us know how she does at the vet.
    Hugs to you both.

I would bet it is the food….

  • thats what I am thinking. She was only tired this morning. I am going home right now to go check on the little girl. I want to make sure that shes ok!

  • She seems to be doing better. She was asleep when I came home. I will see how she is tonight, when I can hang out with her a little more. Thanks for all your help! Urbi says thank you too!

  • Urbi and I went to the vets last night. It was a zoo! The vet did a fecal test and that came back ok so we think it might be the food. She gave me flax to put in her food and also put her on Prescription Diet W/D. We went on a walk late last night and shes already improving! She was such a star at the vets office too! We were there for a reallllly long time and she was soo good. Shes not that great with other dogs but we played with a few. I tried to get her to go on walks around the clinic but she just wanted to go inside and get all the attention. She was the talk of the waiting room! Everyone there petted her and told her how pretty she was. I am glad that it was a good experience for her! Thanks for your concern! I just want my Urbi to get back to her cute normal self!

  • Well I am not very sure about the food but the ticks and lyme disease…It is good you plan to take her to the vet soon. I found a tick on my basenji and I was so worried because she hadn't been on any flea and tick prevention. (I had never seen a tick on or near her before...I've had her for about 2yrs.) I felt so much better at the vet because their was nothing wrong. Just take her to the vet asap.

Did she always have them or did they start after something/some time? Do antihistamines clear the problem?

My Teddy had/has what I would call a rash as well. My vet said it is an allergy (he does occasionally lick his paws also) - at first he thought it was a food allergy but it would go away when the spring rains came. It appears to be related to molds and dust mites instead. I give him salmon oil (not the pills but the real oil), freeze his kibble, regularly clean his blankets etc., and give him oatmeal shampoo baths when it really acts up. I also use dermacton cream if his skin gets too dry. We seem to have it under control.

There are already USDA kennel inspectors. But they are overworked and ineffective, as they confess in a May 2010 audit they conducted of their own operations (available here as a lengthy .pdf entitled "Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service Animal Care Program Inspections of Problematic Dealers" warning: graphic photos in document). Inspection reports are all publicly accessible via the APHIS database in the link Patty provided above: http://acissearch.aphis.usda.gov/LPASearch/faces/CustomerSearch.jspx If you use that link, you'll see that Thunder Ridge Kennel in Iowa was officially inspected five times (at least, on record). There was always at least one "indirect" violation on record. On the day 3/15/2010, which I believe is the day that Iowa rescue groups came to take his animals, the USDA inspector found 21 violations in a report that goes on for 10 pages. Charges ranged from "excessively dirty" food receptacles to "minimal enclosure spacing" (and since USDA regulations don't require very much room to begin with, this is saying something!), to having bug-infested facilities. It apparently takes a lot to shut down a puppy mill, especially when violations are either undocumented or usually amount to a slap on the wrist. We are already funding these federal government agencies, and their actions are, theoretically, available for public viewing. I think the APHIS database is a step in the right direction for the sake of transparency, and I am glad that they took the initiative to conduct a self-audit. However, I would also like to see proactive steps taken to ensure that the appropriate agencies are actually doing their jobs. Whistleblower assistance certainly seems to be called for when the local authorities appear to have difficulty monitoring everything within their own jurisdictions. I do find it hard to believe that the physical relocation of a puppy mill housing 100+ dogs would go unnoticed by local authorities. The community, as "concerned" has demonstrated, is more than willing to mobilize to eliminate what they don't want – and I firmly believe that most people don't want puppy mill dogs, they just may not know about them. So kudos to the citizens of Paola for knowing, and for taking a stand on their own front. Meanwhile, I have reported Rock Creek Kennel's Facebook profile for violating their own terms of service in that a) personal profiles are supposed to be attached to real names, and b) registered sex offenders are not permitted to have Facebook accounts. I have received no response from Facebook. If you would also like to report the profile, the place to do so is here. I have also forwarded this information, including this thread, to the Kansas Bureau of Investigations. (I hope that moderators/admins will keep this thread available, at least long enough to enable investigation and to keep a public record of where this kennel has been.) I received a pretty quick and helpful response from a Kansas state officer who said that the information was being passed onto the Sheriff's offices of the two Kansas counties where Harold Buzz Powell has been noted to reside. However, sex offender registry and the Dept. of Agriculture are typically separate entities, and need to deal with him separately. Anyway, the ball is in their court, and I hope to hear of a decisive resolution.
