Consistant Diarrhea

Has anyone used a food that has been able to keep a dog prone to diarrhea-diarrhea free?
Leo had bad diarrhea and tested negative for giardia. We ended up feeding Royal Canin high fiber for a 3-4 weeks, by the end of the bag we transitioned back to our regular food and he has been doing great for several months. They also gave us a prescription, I'll have to look and see what it was. I think you can only get this royal canin at the vet.

She was treated for Giardia once, but the diarrhea came back. Then she was re-tested and it came back negative.
When Ruby was sick last fall, they tested for giardia but the vet told me that the test isn't accurate and that even though the test was negative it could still be giardia. If you do a search on a thread here about giardia, there is more on that from Mantis & lvoss…I think they indicated that their cure all was Panacur...hopefully lvoss will chime in. In Ruby's case, even though she had re-curring bouts of diarrhea, everyone thought it best to not give medicine...but the Panacur was the next step that was planned. Not that your issue is giardia, but if there is a chance it might be, the thread might be of help.
The food that I was using at the time was EVO, so I'm quite sure that it wasn't an issue with that as there never had been...there were some other things going on at the time so in Ruby's case, I'm quite sure that was more the culprit and not food/treat related at all.
The only thing I know food wise that might be an issue with my limited knowledge is the grain in IAMS...I'm sure the breeders will chime in with some ideas.

The most common treatment for Giardia is flagyl (Metronidazole), Panacur is for worms? It can sometimes take more then on treatment of up to 21 days to cure.
Also your foster may be dealing with other health issues. Very well could be IPSID or IBS (Inflammatory Bowel disease). Stress and/or emotional nature can be a factor. You might want to try one of the Wellness foods, Potato and Duck is one that I use…. (no grains)...
Do you know anything about the foster? where she came from? Andthing on her sire and dam?

My vet thought Panacur might be a good solution as well, but I never went down that path. In that other thread is also an article from Basenji Companions newsletter that talks about using it for Giardia that is quite interesting.

Though Flagyl is what most vets go to as their first recommendation for Giardia, Panacur can also be used and when I have used it I have had good results. It also works quicker than the flagyl and has a far lower rate of recurrence.
Food can also be a contributer to diarreah especially if you dog is developing an allergy to one of the ingredients. Nicky used to get horrible diarreah everytime he ate a Boodah which are most corn starch. When we cut out all corn products the diarreah stopped.
If you suspect food may be an issue, I would look at a food like Wellness Simple Solutions which has far fewer ingredients. I would not use Iams since their foods usually include corn on their ingredient list. California Natural Chicken and Rice is another very simple food which usually is good if you are trying to rule out food allergies.

She is one of the 28+ South Dakota Basenji's. I don't know anything about her past. Some of the other fosters seem to be haveing similar diarrhea issues. I will definately check out the food.

Certainly that could be the problem… as in I would not want to guess what she "had" to eat before you got her.... and of course there is much stress in her situation...

So of course, this weekend she seems to be fine. We took her to meet her new family (hopefully) and I think she will fit in well. She will only be about a mile away so I am loving that I will get to see her on walks! Keep your fingers crossed all goes well..
