Basenji Rental Service?

Basenji Talk
  • So I find myself working in Honolulu. Been here a week and a half and still have a week and a half to go. I'm missing my furkids something terrible. I find myself hoping I'll see someone walking a Basenji so I can get my fix but nope! Wish there was such a thing as a Basenji rental service! I have been sleeping better though because I have the WHOLE bed :D

  • It's tough being away from them…but so nice to have the whole bed!

  • Hawaii? I'll trade! LOL! Seriously, it must be hard to be away and missing your baby!

  • Since getting (2yrs. old) Sahara no matter where we go we miss her terribly. She is such a snuggle bunny and loves to be with us wherever we go that to not have her shadow behind us is just unreal. Two weeks ago we went to Florida to visit family and we didn't worry about her b/c she was in a great Canine Country Club. We still missed her and was so glad to get back home to her, she is our baby. It is probably not good that we love her so much, but we just can't help it, haha!!!!

  • It's funny. I think I miss my Bs more than I miss my husband…(hope he doesn't read this) I always bring the dogs pineapple cookies and sometimes a new Hawaiian print bandana. Last time I bought dog leis for all of them. Wonder if they make Hawaiian shirts for dogs.......:o)

LOL, I have seen them on some websites, I'm sure you can find them there, and of course if you do you need to share photos

I was in Hawaii a couple years ago and got Reggie a bandana that said "My mom went to Hawaii and all I got was this lousy bandana" LMAO (I did get him other things but I couldn't resist the funny bandana

  • so I found Hawaiin shirts for the dogs. Now I just need to find a rubber camera…....

Where I am it costs about $2K+ for a dog from a breeder for just about any breed. Goldens may be less because the litters are so large. That may seem like a lot, but, as Debra mentions, dogs cost money to care for. After vet bills and boarding fees and food, it matters little what the dog cost to acquire. Leaving true puppy mills out of the discussion, given the costs of being a responsible breeder -- testing, vet bills, feeding -- and how much work breeding is, I can't imagine anyone doing it for the money. That leads to two problems for people looking for dogs. One is that since breeding isn't really lucrative, there aren't a ton of breeders, which means the supply of pups is low. Second is that most Basenji breeders want to place their pups in the best possible homes -- remember they aren't doing it for the money -- which means they're looking for people who have had Basenjis before. Something of a Catch-22.

There's nothing like a basenji in the works, from the way they instinctively lay with their had on the bum looking the other way ( I've never met a B that doesn't) to the way you KNOW they all rub on wet towels or play bow…it's all very endearing and in this breed you often identify traits that they all have, an insight into their genetics and their behaviors. I've never enjoyed a breed so much.

My Basenji Billy is quite undershot; he's a purebred, his bottom jaw just didn't stop growing when it was supposed to. That's okay, I'm a bit of a sucker for a dog with an underbite anyway.:) He was my first rescue Basenji.

@Thana: she does have basenji characteristics then apart from her colours and looks.- i also think she must have some basenji blood! She is lovely and lucky no matter what! adorable little face:))))) Having read about the characteristics I think she does. The lady with the basenji that we met also commented on some of the things she was doing as "very basenji" (eg. standing on her back legs so she could see what was going on). Has a lovely wrinkly forehead too. Got very frustrated with me earlier and did her funny bark, more of a wierd howl really. She is def one of a kind. Its a shame we have to have her spayed (not that I could ever justify letting her have a litter).

lol usually when you breed a bigger dog to a smaller dog the Male is the tiny one. Its just dangerous to do it the other way around. As far as DNA breed testing I would go for it if I could. But i am just interested in those kinds of tests. We offer them at our clinic but i haven't ever seen results for them.

OMG, TRUST me…its not only ur baby, Jack has some seporation anxiety, i mean, we rescued him so that may be why, but i Always feel so sad when we leave him, he runs to the window and crys when we leave, but i KNOW it wonly lasts until he cant see us anymore (driving away) my neighbor watched for me. but SOMETIMES he does get into things when we leave for too long. like the other day, when he ate my betta fish food...grr...
