    I agree with everyone that has said that now that he has figured out that it worked to scream and get out.. it is like going back to step one…
    However, while putting the crate in another room might let you have some sleep, that might work, but remember if he really does need to potty, you will never hear that either.. and he will end up soiling the crate.... IMO

    I have been very lucky so far. We picked up our pup on Saturday and we let her ride out of the crate the first half of the ride and then put her in the crate the other half - yup there was some serious screamin' a goin' on. We made sure she played a lot that evening and then into the crate at bed time. Mucho screaming. THEN - I went to the Pet expo in Baltimore and found this huge stuffed dog that holds this big round plastic thing, it's made by Snugglesafe. You microwave the plastic thing for 2 and a half minutes and put it inside the stuffed dog. I put that thing in the crate with the puppy. She whined for just a couple of minutes and curled up right in the middle of the big stuffed dog and conked out!! That was at 11 PM she didn't wake up until around 4AM when she needed a potty break. I guess she was just cold the first night. Last two nights have been great. This Snugglesafe thing is like the snuggle puppy without the heartbeat thing. Oh, and the stuffed dog part is washable.

    I'd post a picture of the new puppy but I haven't figure that out yet. She's a trindle.

    I just got back from Petsmart where I bought this after reading tons of reviews. It is pretty tiny but I figured for $9 I'll give it a try. If this doesn't work perhaps I will try to find a snuggle puppy online somewhere. The website is sold out but I'm sure other pet websites sell them as well…

    I purchased that same one and after only 5 seconds in the microwave it burned. Almost caught on fire!!!!
    Be super careful. I ended up taking that darn stuff out of it and replaced it with a sock of rice. The rice you can put in the microwave for 20 seconds and it does fine.

    I agree with Pat, moving him to another room is not going to fix the problem and then you won't know when he really does need to go out. I will also warn you that my dogs are loud enough that there is no room far enough away that they will not be heard. Nicky literally sounds like an emergency vehicle siren when he howls.

    Though the Snuggle Puppies are sold out they do have the Comfort Puppies which do not have the warmth but do have the heartbeat. But again, now that screaming worked it is going to be like starting all over again.

    I remember those days….we ended up giving in too. Chance just wouldn't calm down! For over 2 hrs he screamed. Alex and I just couldn't take it anymore. Basenji's are just too darn determined to get what they want. Especially sleeping in the bed. Once they get to sleep with you, there is no turning back. Your stuck with em. Just wait...when your pup gets older, they take the WHOLE bed! LOL :)

    I also forgot to add that if Dallas is falling asleep at 10pm then that is when you should all go to bed. Otherwise, you are giving him a 30 minute nap to recharge and be ready for his tantrum in the crate.

    I actually found a snuggle puppy online (not from their website obviously) & they have like 3-4 left so...maybe I should just buy it & not risk them being gone by tomorrow (?)

    I so regret letting him come into bed last night now! Starting from scratch...oh my. :( Thing is, we will eventually allow him to sleep in bed with us vs. in his crate but we want to wait until he is house trained & also he is okay with sleeping/being in his crate regardless.

    I love the choice of the word "tantrum" because that is exactly what I thought of last night. I mean, he was heaving his little body against the crate wall & sticking his paws out the side of the crate. It reminded me of a 3 year old laying on the floor pounding fists & screaming!

    Tonight I will try to keep him active until 10:30 but if he falls asleep at 10 then we could probably do the same. We just like some of the 10 PM shows. I guess we need to get over the watching TV thing now that we have a furbaby :p

    My b's sleep with me.
    Do you think he can't sleep through the night and will wet the bed?
    I know crate training is important, but is so nice to have a dog snuggling with you.

    We made it just over a month with Nexa in the crate. After about a month of her crying in the crate before she fell asleep and waking up early we decided to try letting her in the bed. It was the best night sleep ever. She didn't move all night, I think she realized that the bed was a privilege. My wife was completely against having a dog in the bed, especially under the covers. Now Nexa AND Leo sleep in the bed, usually under the covers. B's win again:D Also, they are crated when we go to work, and we didn't think it was fair to crate during the day and at night. They both do great in the crate during the day.

    Yea…pretty much. I think last night went pretty well because when he woke up he moved a little, which in turn woke me up & I immediately took him out. I did actually buy a small thing of those potty pads so if we were to leave him out I would hope if I didn't wake up that he'd go on it. However, I'm more worried about getting off the bed & finding something to chew to shreds while we're sleeping...furniture...the carpet? As a B owner I'm sure you know what I'm talking about! Haha

    i have one of those soothers… and mine worked fine... although i think 30 seconds liek it says on the instructions is a bit too long.. i do 20 and mia snuggles right up to it. hopefully it works for you too!

    also, reading the posts about your routine.. i know that mia will CRASH in her cage around 930.. and ill wake her up and take her out and she will NOT lay down after.. maybe if you play with him for a half hour after you bring him back inside, but try not to let him have food or too much water.. it would work better. they wake up when you take them outside and think its play time.. maybe that will help him ?

    If you are crating him during the day and plan to let him sleep in your bed anyways, you may just want to go ahead and let him sleep in bed. Unless you are very heavy sleeper, he will probably move around enough for you to know he needs to go out. The only other thing is don't let him sleep in. If you normally take him out at 6am then take him out at 6am because at that age when they are really tired they will "forget" to wake up.

    I vote for letting him sleep in bed. We can turn our furnace down since we have 2 heaters under the covers, so we are also saving energy and the planet so it is all good!

    LOL. Yea but I live in Florida so our heat hasn't been on yet (we moved in this past Sept)! Last night with him laying in between Mark & I, I actually had to turn on the ceiling fan because I was roasting!

    Problem is, if I decide to go with him sleeping in bed with us that is it. I cannot go back! Haha. I'm more worried about him detroying the carpet or something while we're asleep more than anything. I mean, sheets can be washed. I am a pretty light sleeper though so if he moves I should wake up to catch him before he gets to the tasty carpet. Haha

    lol I second the motion, it makes things easier although I know it shouldn't be that way lol…and Nina us to we have to turn the ceiling fan on plus the AC at 72 since Mia is super hot and of course both of them cuddle with me,one at my calves and the baby by or on my neck lol like what's the deal :D

    Hm...the AC may be having to go on a little early this year because if that soothing puppy thing I bought today doesn't work, it looks like he'll be sleeping in bed with us.

    The rule of thumb I was taught is that a puppy can only wait an amount of time equal to their age in months plus one. So, at eight weeks old (two months), your pup can hold it three hours tops (1 month + 1 month + 1). You should probably schedule a couple of potty visits outside during the night, even though it will be a pain. When we got Cosette, my wife and set a timer for three hours and three hours beyond that. We took turns taking her outside. At twelve weeks old, we were able to lengthen the time between breaks to 4 hours, then 5 hours at sixteen weeks, etc. It's tough, but it will keep your home (and her crate) clean!

    Polar Fleece is a better choice, I agree… or sturdy beds/mats for the crate... you really need to see how she does with bedding, none of my Basenjis were bedding killers. And the crate should be in the room where you sleep, next to your bed.... then you are right there to deal with any issues.

    Oh, I was talking about dry hair. There is NOthing that can keep Medjai from wet hair. He will climb on my shoulders and lick my head for 15 minutes if I let him.

    We have really good luck with our little 9 week old at night now (wish I could say that about daytime)… He falls asleep on one of our laps typically around 9:30pm (usually my fiance' is watching tv) and then we wake him back up once he is good and asleep and WARM, and take him outside to pee, this way he does it very fast and wants to go back to sleep, so then we put him in his dog bed. After he is asleep we move the whole dog bed into his small crate in our bedroom. Mind you we won't use the crate once we can TRUST HIM. Our bedroom has brand new carpet and new paint and all new very expensive furniture (basically we did that right before we decided to get a Basenji :P) So then if he wakes up and whines, I get up and rush right to him and immediately take him outside on the leash, he goes immediately, then I give him half a treat and he lays next to me on the bed to fall asleep (he will NOT go back to sleep if I put him in the crate and my fiance' can't handle the screaming (she needs her sleep as she commutes a LONG drive every day)) so then if he falls asleep before I do, I move him back to the crate. Obviously the downfall to this is that sometimes I fall asleep first and then he gets to sleep in my bed... but he always wakes me up if he has to go (I keep my arm around him). But we started this method about a week and a half ago and only had an incident in our bed the first night, since then its been better and better every night! Now he only has to get up one time per night, which is usually around 3:30am now, it used to be 2, then 2:30, etc... so he is getting better. However I have learned to give up on the idea of getting him to fall back asleep after my fiance' gets up for work, he will just fight me the whole time. I sure wish I had the ability to be home all day to not have to crate my dog, but it is not an option, people have to work. So a lot of dogs will have to be crated for long periods of time. Hopefully eventually they get used to it. :)

    I adopted my B and the foster parent that I picked her up from said she would pee in her crate at night if there was a blanket or any kind of bedding in there but is fine otherwise. When I adopted her we decided to leave her out at night and she also seems to be fine with that.
