Strip test positive for my boy!!

    We were told Sally is around 2-2.5 years old. We got her in October, and she was very thin,and shedding. We got her to gain weight,and stop shedding, but recently got her switched to a better food(IAMS) and stopped her V3 because the vet thought she didn't need it with the better food. Now she is really shedding, itching, and lost weight. We put her back on the V3 and are switching back to the old Puppy Chow. (they sent her to us with it from the SPCA)… it takes time to switch. Now she is slowing down on eating and drinks a ton. I am going out the get the strips today. When I took her to the dumb vet ..she didn't think it was diebetes...and didn't test. I am going to look for another vet for other reason...Thanks fro your thoughts..it helps to have an idea of what to do. I really love Sally and want her to be healthy.

    Both those foods have corn… and that might be the souce of her skin problems... Again, is she a mix? or purebred? Regardless I would find a better quality food without any corn and see it that makes a difference...

    And again I would find a Vet asap... and even it your old Vet, didn't think it was this or that, you are the client and can tell them you want the urine checked and bloodwork done...

    There are many, many foods out there, IMO the best have the fewest things in them… especially any kind of fillers, such as corn, beet pulp, etc...
    Nutro-Natural is a decent food, along with Canidae, California Natural, etc... I have used both Canidae and California Natural (Chicken), and am using a mix of EVO and Natural Balance Potato and Duck
    Be care sometimes lamb is NOT the best for them...

    Since her Vet thought that puppy chow was good enough… would not want to depend on that advise

    If you are looking for a corn free food that can be found at a place like Petco, take a look at Organix or Natural Balance both are corn free and available at Petco.

    No strip luck yet…hehehehehe
    but will keep trying....not only with her pee but her vet...

    and food too.... I'll let you know!

    But I did find a new collar that will help with her hair loss around her neck!

    why is lamb sometimes not the best? i have been mixing a little cooked ground lamb in my boys food so he eats it???

    Many dogs with food allergies, don't do well on lamb….. Many dogs will eat lots of things that are not good for them... However if yours do well with the cooked ground lamb, then that is great

    so far no issues - they love it! - sometimes veal, beef or lamb! they eat better than i do!!

    well here's an update on my Anzi boy - he definitely is diabetic - was finally diagnosed on 12/14 - he has lost weight - and looks GREAT now - and his sugar is okay - he gets shots and food twice a day - it's almost just like a human having the disease - there are some complications that can happen like blinding cataracts but so far so good - he HATED his shots at the beginning but is now a brave boy - love him so much!!! if there are any other diabetics b's out there holler -

    I am so glad he is doing well! If he is easy to give the shots to, that is huge! And caught early, with good control, maybe, like humans, he won't have too many complications. That said, my old diabetic dog went blind and you would not have ever noticed, she just slowly adapted. I am really so happy for you that Anzi is doing so well.

    it is so HUGE - he was NOT at first and it was a battle and you would have thought i belonged in a loony bin!!! but he's awesome now!!! so far no cataracts - eye specialist says just ever so slight of one but that he woould be surprised if a diabetic dog didn't have ANY - so = so far so good!!! i bring him to the eye specialist about every 3 or 4 months now but his eyes look clear and he sees the tiniest of spots on the floor that he thinks is food so i know he is seeing fine!!!

    I use the Clinistix because to me there was a more drastic change in the colors. There's only 3 color variations and it goes from pink to purple..not green to a little darker green in the first color change.

    @eeeefarm: For what it's worth, if I was looking to adopt a dog, I would not have been put off contacting BRAT by the OP's posts, but some of the responses could certainly make me think twice about getting involved with the organization! LOL. Well first of all, a very fair post. For the end, really, go look at threads where someone attacks a breeder without contacting them. I defend them with the same passion I show to rescue. My sense of fair play get riled. But please do remember I represent BRAT no more than I represent the breeders. It is my personal opinion. As a rescue, and I have worked with many, they do a great job. It helps to be in a breed where almost any Basenji who is not a risk (ie temperament) can probably be saved by BRAT. When you work in Chow or Rottie rescue, where we have to turn down – no exaggeration -- 20 to 40 for every one we can take, working with BRAT is less traumatic. I can go to a shelter or home and know that if the dog is okay, it won't be put down. I used to walk in shelters to do evaluations on Rotties and Chows and come home crying because even if half of the dogs were stable and wonderful pets, I knew the shelter and local rescues MIGHT save 1 or 2 out of 6 to 10. BRAT stands behind those dogs, as any rescue should. They take them back if there is ever a problem. They pay fosters for medical expenses, which a lot of rescues cannot. They provide support for owners and foster homes. There is NOTHING wrong with BRAT. Of course you get many individuals and some will not be your cup of tea, sometimes someone makes a bad call. But do not judge BRAT by your dislike for me or how I post. Well actually, you might think about this. IF I were a BRAT rep, in any way official, I'd be muzzled or kicked out for expressing my VIEWS in a public forum even if I didn't give away any private info. So again, don't judge BRAT by me. And do remember that I am just as protective of anyone who gets blasted and accused who didn't get contacted first and given the opportunity to fix it.

    @AC~Akeyla: I was wondering when we should have our 1 year old B's checked for Fanconi? For some reason I thought they had to be a certain age. And what is the best way to go about getting them tested? And you are most likely thinking of the urine test strips, which was the only way to detect Fanconi before the DNA Test that is now widely used. Since Fanconi is a late onset, usually it was recommended that Basenjis be strip test with urine test strips beginning no later then age 3 (and tested once a month, every month). If you have a Basenji that DNA tests for Affected, then you still will need to start testing them monthly no later then age 3.

    @JustJunie: Hi, I am new. I am owned by 3 basenji's, one of which was just adopted. I was told that he has that disease and that I need to have a blood test every 6 months. Do you think this is the one that costs $60? I would like to take as good of care as I can for Banjo and I really do not understand all of the ins and outs. I was told to feed him bananas to keep his potassium up, but alas he doesn't seem interested in them. Any information you could share would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Hello! I was hoping we would see you on this site!! Thanks so much for adopting Banjo there!! He has quite a long thread (in the Rescue/Adoption forum) of admirers.     And remember everyone, they really do go bad, so please do not use them past the date….. if there are some of you that live close or even you could do it by mail, you might think about sharing the strips instead of just tossing them
