Westminster Show

Basenji Training
  • @torchsong:

Has a basenji ever won anything at Westminster? I know we're all crazy about them, and know their regal history, but how are they perceived in the dog-judging world?

Years ago, Damara Bolte won the hound group

  • And I think Johnny got a Group 2, maybe? About 8 years ago?

  • @Quercus:

I don't think so?…. He made the cut I think... but I could be wrong...

  • It could be my wishful thinking, or bad memory…or a combination of both...

  • I want to know who I've got to pay off to see a Basenji on the friggin' TV screen?!?

I'm tired of waiting on the hound group to not get to see a basenji!!!

I was just talking about that this past weekend…how is it that the basenji is always shown during the commercials.

  • Yeah…well...unless the Basenji is likely to place in the group, they won't spend much time on showing it. But Westminster for the last several years makes sure that EVERY dog gets seen on the coverage...because so many people were irate each year that there breed wasn't seen. They actually take commercial breaks during the judging. That is why it takes two nights of three hours of programming!

The other shows, on AP and such, and I think the upcoming "National" dog show, is edited to only show the dogs that make the final cut (usually 8-9 dogs)

  • A Basenji won Best in show at Crufts in 2001…..Ch Jethard Cidevant(Cid)

Billed as the largest dog show in the world.

They always show the Basenji at Westminster, as they show all the dogs in the group.. the AP dog shows are not tailored to show every dog in the groups, only the ones that usually in up for winning.. and even on AP they show a quick clip… And for the Euk show which is also on AP, the certainly also always show the Basenjis... as they show all dogs in the Groups

  • Same thing with the show on AP from Crufts… in the last two years the Basenjis "Millie" Tri bitch.. was always shown and in 2005 even highlighted... she did make the group cut each year but didn't place. Again as Andrea said, they usually focus on the group cuts and winners...

  • I saw Millie in the group ring at Crufts this year as my mum was judging that day (not Basenjis) so we decided to stay fro the group as wo had no tired dogs to take home. She looked lovely going round that ring like she always does in the big rings!!

  • On the show after Macy's T-day parade they had a Basenji in the hounds group but didn't show it except on the initial pass-through. I don't think the judge liked that particular cut of dog - there was a similar-looking Pharoah's Hound and one other 'senji-like dog in the group - none of which were picked.

@elbrant said in Operant Conditioning (explained): @eeeefarm said in Operant Conditioning (explained): some professional trainers suggest to their classes that they starve dogs that aren't all that food motivated This is just disturbing... in today's society, this type of behavior would be considered animal cruelty. Certainly we can find a way to encourage compliance without depriving an animal basic care. I know, it shocked me too when I heard it. The first instance was a friend of mine whose Border Collie was disinterested in food rewards, and she was advised by the instructor not to feed the dog anything on class days so there would be an incentive to accept treats. The second instance was my niece, and in this case a German Shepherd dog that again didn't want to take treats, and she was given the same advice by a different trainer, in fact in a different city, so it appears that it isn't unusual. Both these dogs work well for praise and in both cases the owners declined to starve the dogs....

@zande - I have place pups at 9wks, but typically to prior Basenji owners, they know the "ropes"... also I do eyes at 9wks, so 10 works better for me in placing pups and yes...(LOL) mine are raised in the home, no kennel.... and the breeders that I know that use kennel runs, still have their pups in the house for house time and "education".....

Have you tried to contact anyone in the Tucson Kennel Club? http://www.azdogs.com/tkc/ They don't have much of a website, but do have email addys for the President and Secretary. There are likely other kennel clubs in the area also
