Roo's new Wobble and Balance board

Basenji Training
  • Roo is our 13 week old Basenji puppy. We are interested in introducing him to some agility training as well as continuing to work with him on obedience. Roo already knows how to Sit, Come, and is learning to Stay and lay down. He already is willing to walk up a ramp to get on our porch or down from it when we go in and out of the house. I use one of the ramps I built to load my riding law mower into my trailer when I transport it and it seems to work well for Roo's training purposes.

In one of my earlier posts in this forum, someone suggested I get Roo used to a Wobble board and supplied a link on an easy way to build one. I do want to thank that person again for that post.

Instead of building my own at this time, I was in a fitness store and saw a balance board made by Valeo Fitness gear. I did not comparison shop it, but it was selling for $23 retail so I thought it was reasonable. In fact I will probably share it with Roo.

One of the reason's I decided to buy it was because it is made out of hard plastic, so it put to rest my concerns about Roo chewing on a home made wooble board and getting splinters. The min I put it on the floor, Roo explored the Wobble board all by himself. He really seems to find it interesting and is playing with it even if I am out of the room.

Now I need to read more about what I need to know to help Roo progress.

Any thoughts or ideas will be appreciated.

    Thanks

    Jason

:) Watching basenjis coursing really makes me smile. They truly love it. Congrats on the results. Darn those plastic bags! I remember last summer Kevin and Therese had to have a significant number of replacement bags on hand.

@DebraDownSouth: Okay that is pretty funny! Glad the judge passed her. Hey, perhaps the judge appreciated the intelligence to go check something out then resume business? Thanks everyone. She had really lovely runs all weekend (except Sunday's Std run) and I'm so very, very proud of her. She went through a fear(?) period on courses towards the beginning of the year, so she's come a long way. And, DDS, no, agility judges do not appreciate creativity on course. If you don't believe me, ask Jet the trying. :D Of course I always thought maybe the judge watching Jet would think "Gosh, that really is a nicer course."

My Basenjis have always loved radishes… I would start them young with them... just tossing them on the floor whole... they would roll and toss them around the floor and then finally biting into them... a couple of days of that, they were hooked... makes a great treat... but I did make sure they were a bit on the sweet side then the "hot" side

Actually I have bought the muzzles in Austria at that shop: http://www.sofahund.at And yes, the dogs can open their mouths while running. This is the reason why I searched to find these muzzles. They also have the plastic-coated wire muzzles with the wire across the head. Regards, Esther

My personal opinion is that if you don't set ground rules for both dogs, you will have a fight… each needs to respect the other and since Shango was there first, he should be greeted first... and Mowgli needs to learn to wait his turn. But first you will need to teach Mowgli some basic Obedience, like sit, down, stay.... You need to greet Shango first and have Mowgli wait.... if he buts in you need to put him back in a sit/stay until you are done with Shango and release Mowgli

It was 2000ft. The finish judge commented that maybe we should only have gone halfway-1000 ft. Next time I'll run her with a more experienced dog and on a shorter practice. And like I said, Mama's girl and all!
