2 older basenjis need to be rehomed

    Hi all,

    Just wanted to put the word out there about a pair of Basenjis that are needing to be placed; a brother & sister
    pair that Jeff and I sold to a couple while we were still in Mobile are needing to be re-homed. The owners are being transferred to Australia, and don't know when or if they'll be returning to the US in the near future; the minimum that
    they'll be there is two years, and likely more. Misty called me tonight, and they're extremely upset about having to give up the dogs but feel that it's in the best interest of everyone, especially the dogs since they'd be
    quarantined for such a long time.

    Mackenzie and Bowie are ten year old siblings, spayed and neutered, and are from the same litter as my Bred By dogs
    that I was showing when we moved to Minnesota; the parents are both Kibushi dogs that we own. (The sire is deceased now; we put him down at 16 y/o due to dementia and progressive renal failure.) They're a bonded pair, and
    Misty is hoping to place them together as Bowie is very attached to his sister and grieves when they're apart. They
    had the dogs before they had their two daughters, now 6 and 2, and the dogs are excellent with the children–have never snapped, growled or made an aggressive move toward them even when the girls were toddlers.

    The dogs are currently in eastern Washington state, and Misty said that they're not planning the overseas move
    until June and will be able to keep the dogs until then with no problem. Obviously, Jeff and I will take them back if no other home is found, but with our dogs being as aggressive as they are to non-pack members, and the fac that we don't have a kennel set-up, it would be the least desirable situation for all of the dogs. Misty and I are contacting BRAT about helping with placement, but if anyone knows of someone who'd be interested in a bonded pair of
    siblings who are housebroken, good with kids, very sweet lapdogs and extremely affectionate with their humans, I'd love to talk to them. I have no doubt that Misty and Michael would be willing to transport Mackenzie and Bowie
    if a suitable home can be found outside of the Pacific Northwest, so please do let me know if you have any ideas on possibilities as far as homes.

    @Rocky1: Don't worry anyone,Dogs are coming home to me here at Jaroufa Hounds. Richard always knew that he could bring dogs back and his son finally found me. Anubis and Anuket will stay with me until a home is found or I will keep them . Kathryn Are they still available? How old are they? We presently have a 20 month old r/w well behaved basenji that we are thinking about getting a playmate for. Brindle is prefered but will consider another r/w or Tri from as young as a puppy to 2 years old male. Thank you Ruben

    Awww. Such a cute little girl. I think that we would be a good foster for a dog like her, or one of the FL dogs. We have experience working with pathologically shy dogs. We have an already established relationship with a great local trainer, and with a veterinary behaviorist. We have 3 dogs here to help with the socialization. But we have 3 dogs, and a fourth coming within the year. I'm afraid my heart is bigger than what we can really handle. I'm also afraid because there is no guarantee she will be adopted. If I knew it was short-term, and she could go to another place after a few months of work, I would be much more inclined to jump at the chance to foster. But, with the cats we foster, one has been here a year (tomorrow will be a year actually), and another we finally gave in and adopted after 2 years of swearing we wouldn't. The "normal" cats get adopted quickly (we have had about 10 go through our house, with the longest staying 6 mos.), but the behavior cases that need socialization and desensitization/counter conditioning work tend to stay. We have only had 2 foster dogs, and they were great and found great homes, but we are running out of friends to convince to adopt dogs. :) -Nicole

    Dear Basenji Forums Community, I am sure many of you have been wondering what was the outcome of this rescue effort. Well, let us tell you it was unexpected. A rescue mission that was supposed to unite our community to help save a dog turned into a complete opposite and brought us apart. I would like to thank everyone who stepped in to help and put their time and money to attempt to save this dog and offer him a life without neglect. Members who volunteered themselves for this mission had many years of experience with the breed, with both ill-tempered rescues, and those that have been fabulous. They had enough experience to make a determination whether to attempt this or not. While this dog had issues it is imperative to keep in mind he was a just a puppy, and someone was willing to give him a chance. Others may have disagreed on the reasoning for attempting this, but at no time they were given the right to derail this mission and use this forum to publicly attack and discredit members whose only intentions were to help save this dog. As a result of the actions of certain members our whole community suffered: The dog was not saved Forum rules about code of conduct were broken Existing members were publicly offended and discredited New members were exposed to public arguments Our community lost potential member referrals Members had to be suspended from the forum It is really too bad and sad, because we built this community to bring together basenji owners, breeders, and exhibitors throughout the world. To be hopeful that they could help one another and dogs in need. Thank you again for trying to help. All donation have been refunded and no more assistance will be attempted. Which, of course, is unfortunate for the basenji in need. As a last note please remember to review our forums code of conduct and forum rules and to treat others with utmost respect. Like the Basenjis, each of us is unique with our unique character, but our admiration and respect for this breed have brought us together and make us a community.     hi rick, have you applied with brat yet? it is www.basenjirescue.org also sometimes breeders get dogs back where their homes just didnt work out. im sure the right dog will come up. im glad you found this forum. welcome!
