Lazy basenjis!

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • i have a big fenced in backyard and my two bs just hang out on the deck or the wall around the deck - I run around the back trying to get them to chase and play and fetch but i look like a knucklehead because they just look at me like who is that crazy woman!!! i can get them to play in the house more than outside! Any ideas or toys? they will run around if they see a squirrel in a tree or something like that but for the most part not too much exercise in the backyard - just chilling out!!!

  • My B loves the little tennis ball material toys that are also squeak toys. They come in balls, bones, and doughnuts. I just squeak it once, and away he goes forever.

  • For all their spunk and sporadic bouts of insane running, I have found my b to always live by the motto "what's in it for me?". I also have tried to entice him to play (especially with our other dog) but it only happens every couple of days and then, only for a couple minutes. If we bring out an old knotted sock though, that is entertainment for hours! (The only downside is then he thinks its free-rein to eat the rest of the laundry too!)

I've found just trying to entice him and leave him "goodies" to find and play with works best (ie stuffing bones with kibble and pb, or hiding a favorite rope toy in odd places for him to find later).

    Good luck!

  • We use a fox tail tied to a long pole. We used a fishing pole in this vid, but now we use about a 14 ft peice of bamboo, it works so much better. The B's love it and most of ours just can't resist chasing it. Great form of exercise.

Ruby's favourite toy is something very similar…except hers is just a cat toy bought at petco...looks like a mouse to her when I drag it in the grass. I have to let her catch it once in a while or she'll stop playing. Best $10 I ever spent. :D

I need to get the orange one next that looks like a chipmunk...just to mix it up a bit.

Two of ours really go nuts for it and the others to lesser degrees. I'll try to get a vid of the new and improved contraption. The extremely long bamboo pole get's them running better….we run four of them at once and sometimes it's very difficult to keep it away from them.
It's one of the sure fire ways we've found to get them to run.

  • silly question from the jersey girl - and where would i find an extremely long bamboo pole!!??? I am going to try all these ideas!!! hey just improvised! used an old pool skimmer and tied a stuffed animal to the end!!! while i haven't mastered using the pole even if i just take it off the pole and just use the string with the toy on the end they chase it!!!! and even after a long walk/run! their tongues were hanging out but they were chasing it!!!! very cool! thanks!

What ever you have that works.:D We grow some bamboo, but anything can work, the longer the better I've found.:)

I agree with Buddys Pal… if they didn't do either urinalysis or xray, I'd get them done. If you have a sick dog and the vet just sort of says "oh well, blood work looks okay".. may be time for a new vet. Something is obviously wrong.

@tanza: LOL …. so hmm... great weather = higher Vet costs... makes perfect sense to me!!! LOL great weather equals more want to live there. More want to live there, drives real estate costs up. Increased real estate costs drives other expenses up. LOL, it does make some sense. But then, wth is up with NYC which has icky weather? Oh wait, massive overcrowding, never mind.

Yes–I forgot that there are actually homeopathic vets available. We are so lucky here in the Bay Area--we have great vets, specialists and also UC Davis veterinary school/drs not too far away--and believe me--I have used all of these resources over the past 18 years.....

Thank you so much for the encouraging words. We have been running him with our other dogs in our yard, we have about half acre or so, and he is fast..He loves it, just don't think he is used to out heat yet, it is already about 85+ degrees and very humid…I think he looks good, he is definitely babychunky, not fat, but what I envision a puppy looking like before he grows into his own body. We will keep up with what we have done so far and see what he turns out like...can't be bad, just beautiful.. Basenjimamma
