Help! Fiber Capsules

  • Daisy nabbed a jar of Psyllium Husk Caps 500 mg a Dietary Fiber. She chewed the plastic top off. I was just out of the room maybe 3 minutes, when I found her on the love seat with the bottle turned upside down some of the caps spilled down behind the cushion. I can guess she swollowed some, but I don't know how much, or even if she really did.

Should I make her vomit or will they digest OK in her belly?

  • I can't image that they would hurt her. Might block her up some…... but if you are worry then make her vomit....

  • I think it is probably okay…I doubt it would block her, if they are fiber intended for human consumption...if anything, I would predict the opposite!

  • @Quercus:

Well duh… silly me..... of course your right

  • Thanks! Looks like everybody agrees with your answers. I ran up to the drug store to get fresh HP and talk to pharmacist. He didn't believe I needed to make her vomit either. I called poison control and they said not necessary either. He also said if I did to give her 2 tbls of HP. They also told me if she did swollow the capsules, I could expect diarea. Thank goodness it was only fiber.

  • Big Sigh! Daisy has been surfing everything lately. I do believe she's bulking up some muscle now at 6 mos. We are at the point where I can't leave anything out. I am beginning to understand now when some of you who've said that things have to be put high up on shelves or locked in cabinets. Honestly, Duke could jump up and over anything, but he doesn't and I never really worried about this with him. But Daisy does - so next steps are to thoroughly child proof office, kitchen counters and everything else!

I do hope everyone puts their meds up and away. I am so glad that all I had out were the fiber caps.

  • Make sure she drinks plenty of water in the meantime, to help things "move along" easier.

  • Good advice, but as you know, "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make 'em drink." LOL - How do you make them drink? The water bowl is full. :)

If Duke likes veggies, boil some potatoes, cabbage, or whatever you have. Let the water cool then see if the dog will drink it. Mine LOVE it!

If you have a bit of chicken or a beef bone, make some homemade broth and see if Duke will drink it.

Or you could add a few drops of canned chicken or beef broth to water. Not too much though as it is usually too salty.

Sometimes you will get better results if you use a different container than the regular water bowl for this. If the dog thinks it is "forbidden" they seem more interested.

  • Well how creative!! Duh - why didn't I think of that? Flavoring their water. Good to know - Thanks Robyn!

Daisy had a normal poop today, so I probably found her in the act just in time. I tell ya! She is like waiting for me to be distracted so she can execute her next plan! Even when I'm on this computer, I have to get up several times because I hear her into something - a slipper, newspaper, whatever else I may have missed getting out of her range. Like a child, if it shouldn't be there, they will find it! We're going for an afternood romp today, that should make her happy and tired.

  • Glad to hear all is well…, Get some rest, Mom!;)

@nick4 Sounds like an allergy or something biting him. For sure the vets and see what they say. Benadryl for sure, as far as I know it does no harm if you dose correctly.

Hi Sharon Could you try a different dog food? How 'bout some plain non-fat yogurt? I remember giving my Einstein a cooked beef bone (the round ones, shank??) with the marrow in the center…...oh , my poor boy cried......the marrow made it very painful for him to go. I had to limit how much he ate. It was a special treat for him, so he didn't get them often.....that helps the anal glands for sure. Just a couple ideas. Need daily "poop reports" :) Pam "PJ" p.s. you're lucky you can find pumpkin!!!

@tanza: Hmm…. I would "bet not".....gggg;) And you'd win! This morning, Magnum followed me down to the laundry room where I had put some painted-up towels I used last night to get off a lot of the paint when it first happened. Luckily, I was able to grab them up just as he got into position to throw himself down and roll on them. (I trashed them after getting them as clean as I could.) He just loves rolling in stuff that's smelly, whether it's a good smell or a bad smell! He may have learned a lesson, but it's obviously not one that's gonna stop him from rolling in smelly stuff! He seems to be okay even after getting several licks of paint in, no tummy problems, his usual laid-back self. Eating and drinking well.

Phoenix has had a rash like that before i went to the vet I figured a yeast infection is a yeast infection right weather in people or pets so i went and bought some "womans yeast infection meds" those bullet shaped things and just took it out of the wrapper and just rubbed it on his tummy alittle i rubbed it in and made sure he didnt lick at it the next morning the rash was just about gone went to the vet and she said that's what he had and to acaully just use what i did for a day or so and it should be gone it was a surface yeast infection and so as long as i just rubbed that stuff on like it was lotion he would be fine i applaied it 2 more times and it was gone he gets them from time to time and thats all i do it's a alot cheaper in the long run the stuff she said she was going to give me was going to cost me $67. plus the cost of the vet so i figured now i will just save the moeny and go spend 8 :) i would think there might be a problem using that if u have a dog that likes to try and lick it but phoenix could care less he just enjoyed his belly rub while i was rubbing it in :)
