Hello

  • Hi, I'm Smilinhoundz. I currently do not have any dogs. I lost my Basenji Kowboy(10) in February and My Greyhound Indy(12) in May. I miss them both. The longest I have ever gone without a dog is 2 months. I am a California native living in Illinois for the past 4.5 years. I am looking to relocate back to Ca. as soon as a job position for my husband opens up. Until then I have decided to foster basenji rescues with BRAT organization. I will be on vacation in CA until July and then hopefully I will be a great foster mom. My family and friends are a little nervous that I might end up adopting all who enter my home. As a kid I always wanted a Basenji. I read everything I could find on the breed. I was working as a teller in a bank and a couple brought their young basenji in with them. It was the first time I had seen one in person. I thought it was the most beautiful dog I had ever seen. I got Kowboy soon after and loved every challenging minute of him. I still can't believe he is gone. Hopefully I can do his memory justice and provide a safe, loving temporary home for basenjis in need. I will keep you posted.

  • Welcome, were in California will you be?

  • HELLOOO & Welcome! I'm very sorry for your losses. It's not easy to lose a furried one but it sounds like your heart is in the right place & there are lots of basenjis that will benefit from your home :) :)

  • I grew up in Southern California. I lived in Northridge, Granada Hills and Simi Valley as a kid and Canoga Park and Oceanside once I was married. I moved to South Elgin, Il in 1/03. I will be moving home as soon as possible. We are waiting for a transfer in CA to be available. I miss CA alot. All our family is in CA

  • Welcome smilinhoundz! You know I'm wondering if we Basenji owners are like alcoholics? You just can't go too long and you have to have one. Only this time it's healthy!

    Ha ha ha . . . I'm a basenjiholic, I admit it! Crazy isn't it? :D

Welcome smilinhoundz - this place is almost as entertaining as the B's. So glad that you are staying active with fostering. That is so wonderful.

    Enjoy!

  • I can't imagine the hurt you must have felt when you lost your 2 furbabies. I can not even think about losing my baby, Sahara, and my husband has never loved a pet as he does her. You have the most loving idea on honoring your babies, I think that is a fantastic idea. Thanks for thinking about all the lost Basenjis out there, and yea, I bet you will want to adopt.

  • Welcome to the forum…I am so sorry for your loss...I can't even imagine loosing my Jojo but have lost beloved fur babies before and I understand the hurt and grief...I adopted Jojo from BRAT...what a wonderful organization...you are doing something wonderful...maybe you will adopt from BRAT some day when the right one comes along...Good luck...

  • Welcome and kudos to you for helping with rescues! It sounds like Kowboy was a great introuction to the breed. I'm sorry for your loss of him and Indy. this is a great place to share and keep memories alive. I'll keep my fingers crossed for a speedy relocation back to your family in CA!

You will find a lot of new friends here. Do you need the site to order the cheekswab? You order it and do it at home. Very easy!

My heart breaks reading your wonderful story of Dinah - it is so clear she is a huge part of your heart -you will have such wonderful memories of her when it is her time to give up the pain. I also do not believe dogs don't have souls - of course they do - the unconditional love they give, the way they try to help when you are emotionally suffering, the joy they get when they see you coming after a separation - all these and more are proof they are very soulful. A loving companion dog is God's gift. All our hearts are with you, and our tears flow with yours. God bless.

I live near the mountains in Colorado. There are some great trails with open space all around to let thme run around. Gosh I'm so jealous!! We don't have any plasce we could let our pooches loose. I would love a big open space sans any basenji prey :) that way they'll come back
