Our Chance is going on 15 weeks and he has "humped" a few things. His favorite thing to hump is my back
I will be sitting on the couch and he will worm himself behind me and try to hump my back. Of course I stop it immediately. I even went to the extent to purchase him a "hump doll" from the store. He would rather hump the cat or me instead
It has concerned me..The last thing I want is a dog who humps in public. Thats a real conversation starter lol

I believe that this is one instance where negative reinforcement might be helpful. That's the way dogs teach each other to give them space, maybe it would work with humans too. Any one else have any thoughts on using negative reinforcement in this situation?

Vegas, I think you are talking about punishment…negative reinforcement is actually a different principle, that I won't bore everyone by getting into. But yes, you could use punishment here, I suppose. It would depend on what you and the dog viewed as punishment though...I probably just re-direct the pups attention, and find a more appropriate way to play.

A squirt bottle might be an appropriate punishment here.

Querk humped one of our male friends' arms (or tried to, we saw when he got the look in his eye, and distracted him). He did it for a few weeks when he was little. He is intact, and he grew out of it. But he has never been a really "testosteroni" kind of dog. He only humps now when the girls are in heat. Has to be 'his' girls, and it has to be at the peak of estrous. We have a special humpy blanket for him, so he doesn't violate the couch cushions

Hahahaaa!!! LOL :o This thread is so funny - reminds me of morning radio host talk on a rock-n-roll station here in Detroit. Can we get any more descriptive?

When my dog wakes up from sleeping he sometimes humps air and walks while doing it. It is so strange, like he just cant help it. Must be some good dreams:p
Anyone who has seen this just cracks up.
Other than that he humps my boyfriends dog but that is a way for him to get her to play and she really doesnt mind she (Phoebe the frenchie) just kinda stands there and looks around.

I dont know what to make of any of it, I am just glad he does not do it in public

Squiggy does this too, I have never heard of it. He doesnt "expose" him self, but he does look around with a look that says "huh? what is going on?" or it could be "darn it, who woke me up?"
he doesnt do it all the time, but when he does it is so funny. Air humping :p

Cara is 11. She has only love our Samoyed in her entire adult life. No animal is worthy of breathing air. While Pam did take her about 5 years ago for a refresher course, she learned to ignore the other basenjis, not like them. If she freezes, she is definitely waiting for prey. Usually she keeps walking slowly, eyes seemingly forward, until she is within striking distance.

I wouldn't trust my dog to lie in wait until you truly are sure of their intentions. Even then, do you know if their behavior may be stressing out the other dog? And how many dogs and how much time do you have to play out this behavior?

On a good day, Moose the Samoyed runs into up to 10 of his harem on a long walk (usually 3 to 5). He's out to play, that's the goal. On a potty walk when my daughter or her fiance are in a hurry, they give him very little play time and he accepts it. No, he's not a basenji...but also an ancient independent thinking breed. They live to play. We get to decide when.

My point being, I understand that a behavior may be normal...but I am surprised at owners throwing up their hands and letting it go. There are many situations where you need the dog to keep moving, and you want training in force before that occurs. I am not sure at the resistance against that view.

I made sure when my girl did it, I con tinued to pick her up and say stop being so snarky and she would stop imedietely and lick me. I have a very
unusual Basenji who loves to kiss and maybe that is because we kissed on her all the time from the day we got her, and whenever she got grumpy
and than stopped she got loved on and kissed on. She rarely gets annoyed now because we follow through and never let her think she is
the boss. So just follow through and tell her no and dont stop what you already started or she will think she is in control. I was literally
a nervous owner with mine because I had heard so many stories about Basenjis and how difficult they can be, and I always had Whippets which are so laid back it is not even funny. But now I have totally gotten over it. I would get another Basenji in a minute and not think twice about it.
She is the most entertaining awesome dog we have ever had. Just make sure she knows her place in the pack and love on her alot. It has worked with ours.

I grew up with birds, hamsters, cats, dog, rabbits and we had hives of honey bees. Never anything wrong with me all my life even got lucky never stepped on a bee.
My kids have cats, dogs, bird and my daughter never worn pretty little dress cause she would go right under a car with her dad and get grease all over her.
Dirt and my son go hand in hand. They have been healthy.
Now as far as walking to school I could not do that. Been far to many kids never got to school to many out there take kids. So my kids have never been allowed to walk to school. One mile there but anything could happen.
People that usually do not want animals have there little fancy house and do not want the hair or the dirt. We have a friend who has three children just got a puppy about month ago poor puppy. Puppy got over gate in wash room and well had fun while they were at work. She just about lost it aniamls are better off without being that kind of home I told her so. Sad news her husband just went to work for Science Diet and they have a animal day once a month and they told him it was important they had a animal. He lied when got job and said he did. Now there is a puppy my heart really goes out to.

Move the crates to different rooms. The female won't be able to see what's going on. Give the male his food first, then feed the female a little later. Don't let them out of the crates at the same time.
