Beeji had the time of his life tonight

Basenji Talk
  • Beeji had a blast tonight. A friend and I had to clear out a storage hut in our backyard. My friend couldn't come till it was dark so we had the backyard lights on and our flashlights.

As we were pulling out boxes, Beeji was in the middle of everything sniffing like mad and trying to open any box lids not taped down. There were 2 folks coming to pick up a LOT of boxes for a charity yard sale tomorrow. We were putting the yard sale boxes on one side and the keepers on the other.

Beeji had just about given up on the boxes when my friend found an old piece of pink plastic shower curtain (why it had been kept is a great mystery), and Beeji decided it was his and his alone.

He took off running and dived into the center of the plastic and began grabbing the sides and shredding it like mad. At first we thought of taking it away from him but then he grabbed one end and began to run around the yard with the plastic flapping over his back like a cape! It was too cute and I sure wish I had had a camera that would take night time shots but sadly I don't.

We kept an eye on him to make sure he wasn't swallowing any but he was too busy shredding away. Finally after several blasting runs around the yard with said plastic flapping and several more leaps into the plastic and rolling up inside of it and finally shredding it to bits, he just sprawled out in the middle of this huge pile of shredded plastic strips and grinned and grinned.

When the folks came to pick up the yardsale stuff, Beeji ran inside the house to wait with Mom and to get a treat. After they loaded up, we proceeded to pick up a gazillion bits of plastic and then we got to go inside for some warmth and a human treat or two!!!

Beeji was crashed on the couch flat out on his back his head thrown back off the sofa cushion snoring his heart out. What a happy contended little dog!! Gotta love him!

  • great story! basenjis are such great kids!!

Sounds like your vet's office has all the right setups for boarding and for day care - my own vet's office does not have all those facilities. Wish they did! At the place where I do take them, the outside play area is covered,so climbing out is not possible, or I would worry about that as well, since our B's certainly can climb! So glad you have found a place Cody is safe and happy when boarding is necessary.

She-Ra goes to our local park at least twice a week. It's a nice area with a sectioned-off area for smaller dogs or if a dog is having "behavior issues" you can take it in there if there's no other dogs. A lot of "regulars" maintain law and order if a dog owner is getting out of line (allowing their dog to bully, etc.). She enjoys it. Runs in to do her business really quick. Sniffs everyone, but hates it when other sniff her. There'll be the occasional "give me space" growl if too many dogs get around her at once and sniff. Spends most of the time sniffing and standing in the middle of the park staring like a statue at something. Then you get the eventual chase going - those are always fun because the other owners are like 'Oh, She-Ra's gonna get caught!' and I grin and say 'No she's not.' as she runs circles around all the other dogs. I love watching my dog run…it's poetry in motion. After about an hour she's pooped and ready to go back home. We've had very few incidents with her that haven't been swiftly fixed. She seems to enjoy going quite a bit, and we're making friends with some of the regulars...I guess we're fairly regular now by this point as well.

@Quercus: Yes…I have that feeling regularly! It takes my breath away when Bella floats across the yard at over six years old...she looks as beautiful as she did as a puppy...moreso even :*) And then the spell is broken, as her son uses her as a mop to clean up all the dirt on the patio ;) Ha, ha, ha…mine is a similar story... I'm in awe the way Ruby moves...it is breathtaking. And her coat is dark chestnut so the white is soooo white, she is beautiful. And Brando is so muscular and such an incredibly male looking boy...so handsome. Liyah's coat is gorgeous...really dark chestnut with not a lot of brindle stripes...they are all so lovely to look at and I think how lucky I am that they are happy and healthy. And then "snap back to reality"...Liyah goes and clamps on Ruby's neck or grabs Brando's tail and then the noises of "cujo" end my beautiful picture. :D:D:D

For all those of you living in cold climates - I got a "Chilly Dog" coat (http://www.chillydogs.ca/) for Brodie a couple Christmases ago. It is a great design and super warm and has held up really well. A bit expensive but worth it. He also got a matching head muff which was supposed to keep his ears warm (this was when we were living in Ottawa and the -40C weather) but he hated having his ears covered.
