Basenji Measurment Ideas

Basenji Talk
  • I'm curious what the measurements so to speak would be for an adult basenji for the following things, I know each dog differs, but whats the average?

    Collar?

    Crate?

    Harness?

    Gentle Leader?

    Coats?

  • Collars, GLeader, and Coats I usually go with small. Many times they usually have the sizes based on weight so it makes it easy.

The harness I believe was the only one that mine didn't fit into a small so I had to get a medium which is a little big on them. So it's annoying because it looks like they're in between sizes.

  • Collar? 10 -16 inch size.
I really like the brands that sell this size in the 1 inch wide.

Crate? 200 Vari Kennel for the car and a 300 Vari Kennel or equivalent sized wire crate at home.

Coats? Sizes 14 and 16 in Fido Fleece

  • Collar: I use 16".

Crate: I use the Medium Vari-Kennel for travel and home. {27x20x19}.

    Coat: Couldn't tell you. When absolutely necessary I use a wool sweater that used to be my sister-in-law's. She dried it in the dryer, and now it fits Jazzy perfectly except the sleeves are too long and we just roll those up. LOL {I've posted a photo in the photo section. She looks ridiculous, but stays oh! so! warm!}

  • I shouldn't say it fits "perfectly" because it hangs loose, but it does keep her very, very warm.
We don't use it here, and only needed it while at my mom's, in the mountains, when it was in the 20's and Jazzy insisted on walking down the road and over a hill to potty.

  • Jazzy's Mom,

That right there is the answer to what I can do with things that get shrunk in the dryer! That is great, LOL!

Where I am it costs about $2K+ for a dog from a breeder for just about any breed. Goldens may be less because the litters are so large. That may seem like a lot, but, as Debra mentions, dogs cost money to care for. After vet bills and boarding fees and food, it matters little what the dog cost to acquire. Leaving true puppy mills out of the discussion, given the costs of being a responsible breeder -- testing, vet bills, feeding -- and how much work breeding is, I can't imagine anyone doing it for the money. That leads to two problems for people looking for dogs. One is that since breeding isn't really lucrative, there aren't a ton of breeders, which means the supply of pups is low. Second is that most Basenji breeders want to place their pups in the best possible homes -- remember they aren't doing it for the money -- which means they're looking for people who have had Basenjis before. Something of a Catch-22.

My Basenji Billy is quite undershot; he's a purebred, his bottom jaw just didn't stop growing when it was supposed to. That's okay, I'm a bit of a sucker for a dog with an underbite anyway.:) He was my first rescue Basenji.

lol usually when you breed a bigger dog to a smaller dog the Male is the tiny one. Its just dangerous to do it the other way around. As far as DNA breed testing I would go for it if I could. But i am just interested in those kinds of tests. We offer them at our clinic but i haven't ever seen results for them.

Lisa, how about an article that actually says that Basenji's can bark. We know they cannot continuously bark like other dogs but we do know they can give us one or two good loud barks. We also know besides the Roo and the Brrrr, they can make cat like noises, and several other sounds. An article called and describing the "Sounds of the Basenji" and/or what each sound might indicate and mean might be interesting.

OMG, TRUST me…its not only ur baby, Jack has some seporation anxiety, i mean, we rescued him so that may be why, but i Always feel so sad when we leave him, he runs to the window and crys when we leave, but i KNOW it wonly lasts until he cant see us anymore (driving away) my neighbor watched for me. but SOMETIMES he does get into things when we leave for too long. like the other day, when he ate my betta fish food...grr...
