Oh Savanah, don't you cry for me….

Basenji Talk
  • Savanah is a little girl that we rescued from a non basenji owner. She (just found out) is 2, not three an will be 3 in October. She has been with her new owner John for a week, spayed, and a super trooper.

John went out of town for 4 days and we have been Savanah sitting. She is such a doll!! So happy and playful. She has been so excited to see Cairo and Caesar.

We go for walks (3 dogs together) and she can't keep herself from jumping all over Caesar to play while walking. I think she is in love.

Indoors it is all Cairo/Savanah play time. Non stop.

What has been interesting was when she left the first time to go to Johns. Cairo, our sweet 8 month old puppy really experienced a dose of his own medicine that month (when she lived with us). Savanah was non stop crazy play mode…biting and just full on action all over Cairo.

When she left, Cairo was completely calm. Of course he was looking for her, but he stopped doing the puppy hard core annoying biting with Caesar. I think he got it. Didnt like the non stop chewing on him, so he is chill with the ole' man. Fantastic!!

And, it is so great to have her in the house for a while to let them play crazy. She has really become quite a lovely little girl.

If anyone is contemplating another basenji and isnt sure, offering your home as a foster parent can be such a joy. To see a basenji in need grow to health and social interaction is really a joy.

  • How sweet. She sounds adorable. My Savannah is not playful at all. We thought she would be a good playmate for Talker but she's more of the quiet, contemplative type. She rarely plays with him.

    But we love her truly.

  • I am sure that is better than having two dominant basenjis for sure.

I never stop learing new things about this breed. They are so interesting.

Ladybasenji, where are you in Quebec? Montreal? We have a place in Gatineau (Aylmer sector) and one of my dogs might even be related to yours. You're experiences with your girl remind me so much of my first basenji, about 20 years ago–it gets easier, I swear! Let me know if you'd like help with Lady--they're nothing like labs and will never be "obedient" but there are tricks for training them : D

wow! nic memories! Here on my city my sister cant belive that people even stop theirs cars to ask "what breed is your dog"? some people get pictures with the cellphone or with their tablets so a walk with my girls on the downtown is a secure chit chat with the people. A remember 3 ladies, they were so amazing! Maca dont put so much atention on people specially girls, but those ladies was talking to Maca saying she was sooo pretty sooo sweet sooo everything and Maca start to bend those ears and make noises they were more happy and carry on and Maca more and more sweet Whilw They was saying Maca was soo sweet and bla bla and i was thinking.. ha! she is a little naughty and sometimes so dominant.. but that day Maca plays her role to perfection. She deserves a Oscar.. Other day she was confused with a male chihuahua, a lady ask if we can breed our dogs, i said, well is a SHE and is not a chihuahua, the woman start to apologize i dont care well.. i dont like Maca be confused with a male dog, but was funny at the end. But on general people use to think they are like foxies or pitbull or little deer. I said to some kids that i was ironing the tale all days to get curled. They believe it and i was worried they try to iron his own dog, so i said that noooo! that was natural and ironing a dogs tale is a ugly idea. Oh one day i lef Maca with the policeman at the bakerys door ( he was at my sight anyway) and when i was out i found the man with several people asking him if was a police dog or some kind of new police dog because looks so nice and so naughty hahha The poor man have no words and just was smiling while the people was taking picture of him and the dog. lol So the last time that i walked with my sister she was wow! i cant believe it.. the people stoped to ask what breed is.. Yes, my girls are used to some fame.. and i like they socialize with the kids.. not so much with the grown people and with so many thief getting his eyes on pure breed doggies not so nice but well… i said the are naughty some times.

I know.. time flies … already two and a half....... You are so right,, i guess the thing is I am envisioning a bit of a change in my living situation, where I may move to a bigger place and also maybe have the possibility of going to the mountains on a regular basis. This may or may not happen, but I guess I will know this year. If that happens then I definitely will want another.

Oh WOW, you guys are sooooo helpful. Thanks DDS for the link, that was especially helpful. I'm just intrigued with this breed for some reason, and I'm not sure why. Reading what all of you have to say is better that the typical things that you read on the computer. They all just repeat the same thing over and over where as all of you can give me personal experiances. I know all puppies are a lot of hard work, but compared to other dog (which I see some of you have had other breeds) are they actually a lot tougher? All pups like to chew and get into trouble but are they especially hard to train. Lets say with housebreaking and such? Oh and for all of you that have cats too, do they stay out of the kitty box or are the prone to make there way there, if you catch what I'm saying. I read they they are very clean and often times will clean themselves like a cat does. Really? And they are aloof like cats? Soooo much info and I would rather hear all of this from you than get false info. HELP!!
