New member adopting a rescue Basenji

  • Hello, My husband, son and I are in the process of adopting a rescued Basenji, female, 10 yrs young. She is healthy. We have had dogs in the past, the last one died almost 2 yrs ago–cocker spaniel--and this is our first Basenji. We have been reading info provided by BRAT (Basenji rescue) and are looking for any helpful info. She is still with her foster mom and we have only seen pictures of her and her bio. We are to talk to her foster mom in the next day or so. Thank you

Welcome and thank you for adopting a senior. They deserve the best. :)

  • Are you going through BRAT? What is the B's name that you were thinking about adopting?

  • welcome! and congrats on your new B :) I'm sure you will learn a lot here! Read up on a lot of the Behavior Threads & this will give you a good sense about what B's are like :D

  • Welcome. This is a great place to learn about Basenjis, quirks and all. Read up and let us know when you get your new baby!

  • You are about to rescue the best breed of dog in the world, I think anyways. They do however, take alot of patience, but well worth it. They are the most affectionate dogs I have ever seen, and the smartest. My baby, Sahara, is 1 on the 31st, and I have only had a few issues with her, but we are working those out. My hubby and I often talk about how this dog has enlightened our lives, you can have a bad day and come home to this most loyal and loving pet and all is good with the world. She is the best, and thank you for thinking about the rescue, I hope you will adopt.

  • Good luck with your new family member! I think Basenjis are wonderful and this resource has been an excellent place for me to learn more about my pup.

  • Well we are looking at two, Hunny and Jojo but are leaning towards Jojo. Hunny isin PA and Jojo is in FL. Jojo is 10 and Hunny is 9. Thank you for your response.

  • Thank you for your response. I am happy to hear from others about how "up lifting" they can be and sweet.

  • I read both of their profiles and both sound like they would make wonderful additions. Kudos again for adopting an older dog, it's so hard for them to find forever homes and they do so deserver one.

  • Thank you for your input. All "positive reenforcement" for us is much welcomed.

Where did you get their profiles?? Are Hunny and Jojo listed in the BRAT website? You're quick spitfire. ;)

  • Yes, they both are listed in BRAT.

  • That is so awesome. I would rescue them all if I could! Basenji's are truly special creatures. You will know once you have her. My husband took ours to have her teeth cleaned this morning before I left for work. And it was the worst feeling that she wasn't by my feet as I ate my breakfast and got ready. It was a nice reminder of how much she means to me and how much she brings to my life. They are such intelligent little creatures with such large personalities. I can't wait to hear all your stories!! Best wishes!

  • Hi,
I've just checked their pages on brat's webpage. They both look adorable. You can't make a wrong choice. Older pals are just great. Congrats!!!

@elbrant That's how all my 8-some learned to catch. If food dropped on the floor - you lost it ! So they all stood on their hind legs and it was like feeding a nest of fledgling sparrows. A gentle toss of the treat and someone caught it !

@katzmeow My Grandmother had a Maltese that my Cousin gave to her. That little Dog bit my Grandmother all the time but she refused to part with him. My Paternal Grandmother loved Dogs (which she always had since she married my Grandfather), Cats and she always had a Canary that she called 'Petey! I like all animals but the biting is not good for anyone. The little Maltese lived with the Cousin who gave her to my Grandmother after my Grandmother passed at the age of 97!!! I have never had a Dog, Wolf, or Horse that bit me BUT the Feline I have now (the Killer Cat) bites me all the time. She cannot get me through the Denim but it is really annoying!!! Very sweet dog you have there! A

Hi Angie, She does look like a Brindle Basenji. Also i think Basenji's eyes look like they are wearing eyeliner. Hope you and your family are enjoying her and the many wonders of the Basenji breed.
