Zande Basenjis Pedigree Website database

Basenji Talk
  • Per Sally Wallis - the keeper of the Basenji Database:
Please can you tell everyone who needs to know – basically the entire Basenji Fancy – that I have put the database on an SSL security whatsit. And therefore the address has changed slightly. I did it last night and Google hasn’t yet picked up on it but will soon, I hope.
    The database is now https://pedigrees.zandebasenjis.com/
Please forward to as many people/groups who need to know.

  • Thank you very much Pat ! It was a bit hair-raising. I wanted to be sure it was an easy transition so phoned the Server. The man I spoke to was adamant. No, I would not have to make any changes, yes Google would update it, yes everything would be easy. . .

Why did I believe him ? First thing were all kinds of 'DANGER !' messages and emails from people who could not get to the site from Google. I managed to get to it in the end, but nothing worked - so I thought carefully and realised I needed to change links in all the scripts which run the program. There are dozens of them. Then I chickened out, didn't dare upload the new scripts so I called my computer guru who came over a couple of hours later, checked my work (and found a load more to do. . . ) and we opened a couple of cans of beer, held our breath and uploaded the scripts.

Phew ! It all worked fine, but now how to get the change publicised - I don't do FaceBook. Luckily lots of helpful people are putting the new address about, and hopefully Google will find it soon.

Where I am it costs about $2K+ for a dog from a breeder for just about any breed. Goldens may be less because the litters are so large. That may seem like a lot, but, as Debra mentions, dogs cost money to care for. After vet bills and boarding fees and food, it matters little what the dog cost to acquire. Leaving true puppy mills out of the discussion, given the costs of being a responsible breeder -- testing, vet bills, feeding -- and how much work breeding is, I can't imagine anyone doing it for the money. That leads to two problems for people looking for dogs. One is that since breeding isn't really lucrative, there aren't a ton of breeders, which means the supply of pups is low. Second is that most Basenji breeders want to place their pups in the best possible homes -- remember they aren't doing it for the money -- which means they're looking for people who have had Basenjis before. Something of a Catch-22.

Oh Barklessdog, you are a brave person. I must now stand with you in insane-solidarity and admit I bought it too. It is awful but when you get the line "we couldn't say goodbye so we took him home" part, you know you got to help support the woman. lol

@Thana: she does have basenji characteristics then apart from her colours and looks.- i also think she must have some basenji blood! She is lovely and lucky no matter what! adorable little face:))))) Having read about the characteristics I think she does. The lady with the basenji that we met also commented on some of the things she was doing as "very basenji" (eg. standing on her back legs so she could see what was going on). Has a lovely wrinkly forehead too. Got very frustrated with me earlier and did her funny bark, more of a wierd howl really. She is def one of a kind. Its a shame we have to have her spayed (not that I could ever justify letting her have a litter).

@Nemo: Perhaps we should have them add the breeder's name as well? I know it's not posted on the database itself but I believe Sally keeps records of it. It's another resource for rescue. Often you should be able to tell the breeders name by the name of the dog because it is included in the dogs registered name. For my dogs name is "Maly Ksiaze Next Germanika," His breeder is Germanika kennels. His father is "Mutabaruga's Desmond Dekker" out of Mutabaruga kennels. His mother is "Art Of Noice Loango" out of Loango kennels. So technically the breeders names are listed on the website. The only time you will not have breeders name listed is when they are BYBs, profit breeders, puppymills, opps litters out of those that may not fixed their registered dogs (not saying they are showing dogs), people who breed to "discover the miracle of life," and other things like that. Reputable breeders will REQUIRE that their kennel name is included in the dogs registration.

OMG, TRUST me…its not only ur baby, Jack has some seporation anxiety, i mean, we rescued him so that may be why, but i Always feel so sad when we leave him, he runs to the window and crys when we leave, but i KNOW it wonly lasts until he cant see us anymore (driving away) my neighbor watched for me. but SOMETIMES he does get into things when we leave for too long. like the other day, when he ate my betta fish food...grr...
