    My husband and I are looking to become owner of a Basenji. We are based in Norwich but we don't mind travelling within the UK.

    We know that breeding usually takes place at a particular time of the year, could any breeders please get in touch to be put on waiting list?

    Would be living with 2 adults in a house with garden. This will be our first dog but we are used to dogs.

    @Zande has a list of people waiting for Basenji's in the UK. Not sure how long it is at this point, but I would reach out and ask if she could assist you with updated information. Good Luck!

    @tanza she has a long list of people wanting to get a Basenji puppy. As of yesterday it numbered 203. Which is unprecedented, normally 3 or 4 in a year.

    Some I have put in touch with breeders and they now have their dream dog (😍?). Others I have tried to dissuade as they obviously knew nothing about the breed and I tried to get them either back to the drawing board or into doing more research.

    Several have imported from other countries, only to find incorrect papers accompanied their pups and the kennel club here refuses to register them. Some are from health tested parents, some not. I try to persuade them to see health certificates of parents.

    I just hope all these pups end up in genuine loving homes and not as potential cash cows - for breeding stock to get on the bandwagon created by working from home.

    That is ending soon here and I worry our rescue service will become overwhelmed. Already puppies are appearing on for sale websites at exorbitant prices. Original purchasers looking for a profit ? The people to contact are our breed clubs and rescue coordinator

    For all of you looking for a Basenji - Thnak out of the box, there is a whole world out there. When I lived in Hawaii, wanted a Basenji. None were in the USA. Got hold of a person in NZ and he found me one and for $2000 total cost ( dog and airfare ) I got my first Basenji.

    @morsesa At the moment so many people are breeding because of the demand, and scammers are rife. People are advertising puppies and taking deposits when there are no puppies. It is also a risk that puppies from some countries may not have the right papers and can't be registered. Also that no health tests have been done on the parents.

    It is not as easy to go outside the box these days.

    All pups have been placed as responsible breeders have reservation lists. We are not at this time planning a litter for 2020 or 2021. I would be happy to talk to you about Basenjis. You can search for responsible breeders at www.basenji.org by state, however as far as I know all responsible breeders on the West Coast already have full reservation lists. You would be looking at litters possible in 2021. This is the time to connect with a responsible breeder and get on their reservation lists for 2021. And if you are looking for a dog that is hypoallergenic, Basenjis do shed and have dander so they are not really hypoallergenic. While they can do well with people with allergies, you need to spend time with them and more than one time. Be sure that you check out health testing yourself, regardless of what you might be advised. Tests for DNA testing is public knowledge at www.ofa.org. You need to have either a registration number or name to check this out for yourself to verify. I suggest all people looking for a Basenji, even my own, do this.

As for champdogs site... when a site allows anyone to post if they pay a fee, not a good source. If all you need is a fee and one health test to be approved to be a member, not a good site if you are looking for well bred dogs from responsible breeders. Memtuka keeps protesting.. but this info is directly from her own pages. If she has more testing, then she lacks the professionalism to comprehend that people knowledgeable about breeding would never leave out tests, nor expect puppy buyers to look for further tests. As it is, it is woeful. As is her comment that she tests only if going to breed. A good breeder tests every single dog they produce and keep because they want to know what is in the line. The stud dogs I used ARE health tested and as far as I am aware Champdogs is a reputable website.     My gut feeling is if you can't find a dog who is utterly good with cats already, your best and safest bet is a puppy. I suggest you get on a couple of breeder's list and wait for the perfect pup for your house.

    If funds are an issues, you can do what I used to do before BRAT came along. Find out the vet of the family your placing him with, have the family pay you for your expenses and then take the dog to the new familys vet for the surgery to be fixed. Drop the dog off the day of the surgery and then new owners pu the dog. They get to pay the bill. That makes sure the dog is fixed, sets up a new vet record for the new dog in the family, and you don't have to pay anything out of pocket. Mostly, you know the surgery WILL BE DONE. Thanks for making sure he is fixed before rehoming. That is so important.
