I give doodle the "VetIQ MultiVitamin", which seems to be available everywhere from Chewy to Petco to Walgreens and Walmart and well, everywhere. No clue if they are Gonto Protocol compliant because I have, personally, never heard of the "Gonto Protocol". Perhaps you could enlighten us as to what it is and what it requires?

Thanks! It is for basenjis with Fanconi. A protocol created by a vet, Dr. Gonto, for treatment/mitigation of Fanconi to alleviate symptoms and extend the life of the dogs by slowing renal issues. https://www.basenjirescue.org/fanconi/fanconi-protocol-2015.pdf

@allisonmosley But what is the critical ingredient that makes one vitamin acceptable and another not?

Not to have heard of the Gonto Protocol, @elbrant ! It is something everyone should be aware of, along with knowing that the parents of your Basenji have been checked for Fanconi, and, preferably, your own Basenji too.
Given the slightest risk, you download the Protocol and make sure your Vet has a copy. And that he has read it and is aware of what it means.
There is also a copy on my own website http://www.zandebasenjis.com/protocol.htm and on several other places across the web.

@zande My girl is a Fanconi Carrier. It is my understanding that she will not get Fanconi, therefore, treating it is not a concern. If she were at risk, certainly. I was trying to find out what would be in a multivitamin that would make it better than another (in regards to Fanconi) because the OP (original post) mentioned it.

@elbrant - In the protocol, Dr. Gonto talks about a multivitamin that would be advised to give. Here is what is in his protocol:
Any complete canine or feline vitamin/mineral replacement product given BID. Example,
PET-TABS PLUS AF (Advanced Formula). (Previously PET-TABS PLUS.) -

@allisonmosley said in Multivitamin?:
Which multivitamin is everyone using these days that is compliant with the Gonto Protocol?
@tanza ...This is where my confusion came in... it sounds like some multivitamins are compliant, some are not.... for clarification purposes: are you suggesting amy "complete" product would be suitable?

@elbrant - So you are saying that recommendations from Dr. Gonto for Fanconi afflicted dogs is not correct? Go to Dr. Gonto's protocol and read what he says about multivitamins. This is what he says and I would take it to the "bank"... no questions asked

No. I said nothing of the sort. The original post suggested that some multivitamins were better than others by asking which ones were compliant with the Gonto Protocol. I was only asking for clarification. Nothing more.

be aware of the Protocol, as should all Basenji owners - if only to be in a position to advise others.
I would never advise anyone on something that I was not well versed in. I have plenty of things to keep me busy without adding more things on the off-chance that someone might ask me a question. I would much rather defer to members who have first hand knowledge and experience.
