Chicago travel

Off Topic
  • So, I swear, I have never traveled as much as this year. Anyway, we are off to Des Plains Il. for the weekend for a weeding in Chicago. One of our favorite cities–in the summer! Anyway, If any locals would like to meet up or allow us to see your spectacular pups we would love to come! We are driving from Columbus on Friday after my son gets out of school. So we will be leaving at 3ish. It will take us about 6 hours to get there and we MUST stop at IHOP on the way since we do not have one here. The wedding is on Saturday and in the morning we may try and go to the Childrens museum. I heard it is really nice.
My mom is babysitting the furkids which I am a little nervous about but they will be fine.

I cannot imagine committing to buy a puppy without seeing the animal and if possible the sire and dam. OTOH, a rescue (or adoption of an older dog) is a different thing. My last two Basenjis came to me sight unseen, and turned out to be wonderful dogs, but the breeders I got them from wanted to place their dogs in an experienced Basenji home, and I only paid the cost of getting the dogs to me. One came by air, one was personally transported to me by his breeder. If she hadn't been happy with what she found I expect she would have taken him back with her when she left. I also had to commit to return him if ever I couldn't keep him. Good breeders care about where their dogs end up.

Although I have a bit of an outside perspective (being just a pet owner), this legislation seems a lot like the legislation in cities like DC which outlaw handguns. Responsible people wind up either paying fines or following the rules only to then have the irresponsible criminal element aquire illegal handguns anyhow. The law does not decrease crime rates to the extent that it's proponents put forth. I see the same situation happening with this sterilization legislation. It will be those who are responsible breeders and owners who will suffer. I do think the person who mentioned sterilization of cats to prevent feral populations makes a lot sense than dogs. Cat fanciers could apply for exemptions and the people who own cats as pets wouldn't be nearly as affected as those who own dogs. I would hazard a guess that a great deal fewer pet owners show/compete with cats than dogs. My big question is why does the "solution" always appear to be legislation and punishment. What about an incentive program instead? A small percent decrease in property tax for neutered pets…waiver of dog license fee...access to a special dog park for free where intact animals are charged a small fee...etc. There is just way too much legislation put forth without first initiating active problem solving.
