4 month old basenji makes single high intensity squeak/shriek

Basenji Talk
  • Hi- She has done this once every day or so lately. We thought maybe it was as a result of a dream, but just now it happened when she was awake as well. It sounds much like when you test a smoke detector and with the same intensity, or a ULTRA-loud squeaky toy's single squeak, and she shows no physical response or reaction upon making it. We want to comfort her immediately but she doesn't seemed bothered by it at all - as if it didn't happen. Has anyone else experienced this or have an explanation?

  • What is she doing when this happens? And I would suggest you try to tape it and take to the Vet.... and have you spoken to your breeder about this?

  • My 9 month old has always done this. It sometimes happens if she suddenly gets under someone's feet and they accidentally kick her and other times for no apparent reason, but we assume she may have been startled by something. She doesn't have any health issues that we know of.

  • @jkent - Understandable if someone kicked her or startled her... you need to try and figure out what is happening prior to her doing that... And only a Vet would know if it was health related

  • @tanza thanks, will bear that in mind. It doesn't happen often enough with no obvious reason that we've been concerned, but will keep an eye on it. We wondered at one point whether she was getting bitten by something but skin looks normal and she's not overly scratching.

  • You know, when you said that, I remembered. When ever our dogs got bit, like even a mosquito, we'd get the one loud shriek.
Ok, another gross story: My daughter had long hair, and once in awhile, the dogs would eat one. (we tried our best to prevent this from happening) When they had to poop, sometimes out would come 'poop on a hair chain. At times like this, and the mosquito bite, I think the shriek was more in surprise than pain, but we still tried to prevent the hair eating.

  • She is resting when this happens. No physical contact with anybody. Just doing nothing really. As I said, sleeping or napping mostly.

  • We have one Basenji who screams if she is startled, a regular prima donna. She sometimes wakes up at night and howls like a wolf until she is consoled. Her mother is very calm about everything.

@cognition said in Basenji Puppy - Indoor Fence/Crate?: I'm torn between enjoying him as a puppy and hoping he matures lol You will miss the puppy as soon as he outgrows it. You will also remember it fondly, and every once in a while... you will get a glimpse of that puppy and he will melt your heart all over again.

@m0nia86 I know, what are the odds! I have not been up Cavehill in years also, so maybe it was meant to be that we bumped into eachother 😊 I saw the forum notification about Northern Ireland and I thought hmmmmm that's interesting, and had to take a look. I will private message you the email address that I have for Charlotte, but I am sure it's the same as what you have already been given.

She's gorgeous - Probably Basenji in there somewhere, yes, Beagle though ? only the colouring might suggest it. Try a DNA test if it really matters !

@sammm Basenjis are a long and winding road. My first was a challenge at first as I had no idea that a Basenji was different from a “normal” dog lol. After the first year, I found myself looking for information on the internet to find out why he was so different. At one point I seriously wondered if maybe he was just crazy or something. I was very surprised to find out he was actually just doing normal Basenji things and that they are all like that lol. As with most things, when they are challenging and hard work, the final rewards are greater and more cherished. This year is the 50th anniversary of the moon landing, a great achievement that was not easy, required a lot of hardship and work, along with some luck. But because of those things, the achievement was greater and more rewarding. Those who endure the difficulties and bond with their dogs, would in the end never change a thing. They are very rewarding, over time you will get back more fun, laughs, education, love and affection than you can put in. The day comes all too soon when you will wish they were howling all night in the kitchen because they wanted to be with you or chewing the $20 bills from you wallet because they were bored. Enjoy the moment, that is the Basenji way.

Hi, Socialization was one of my worries and I wanted to get it right, get your friends over and have them wear hats and bags and anything and everything at different times, what we did at home was just getting the household socialization such as umbrellas, pots, rubbish bins etc started and if you have friends with vaccinated and friendly dogs get them around. There is a lot of socialization you can do before your pup is fully vaccinated at home, rubbish day is a good day for standing at the gate watching the big noisy trucks go by, picking up the bins and banging them down, watching the mower, hearing the motorbike being started. Just remember let your pup take it's time don't force it when it is uncomfortable. Our 6 month old boy is doing great and is quite a confident fella. At 14 weeks we did puppy class for 7 weeks and only started going to a dog park at 4 months and he automatically knew how to be a dog when he was with the other dogs. Good luck.

Our rescue now adopted Kell was 16.01 when we got him at 4 mos, now at 6 mos he is 29 lbs!!! But he is taller than all our other Bs, he is so active there is very little fat on him. He was on the thin side when he first got here and ate almost constantly for 2 weeks. Now he gets a small breakfast and a normal supper with the rest of the pack. We bred our own Bs in years past, and they do tend to tighten up after a year. As a pup, I am not going to put him on a "diet" at this time. As long as she is healthy, eats well, I do not think I would worry about it. Our 5 year old girl only recently went over 20 lbs, and we changed their dog food and all the adults have lost weight and look and feel much better I do believe. Enjoy!
