Looking for a Basenji puppy/ young adult

Basenjis For Sale or Wanted
  • Hello! My girlfriend and I are looking for a basenji puppy/ young adult to adopt. I know they are hard to find and we are very motivated ! We live in Nebraska . Willing to travel or pay for shipping . Thank you

  • You can search for responsible breeders at www.basenji.org by state, however as far as I know all responsible breeders on the West Coast already have full reservation lists. You would be looking at litters possible in 2021. This is the time to connect with a responsible breeder and get on their reservation lists for 2021.

Be sure that you check out health testing yourself, regardless of what you might be advised. Tests for DNA testing is public knowledge at www.ofa.org. You need to have either a registration number or name to check this out for yourself to verify. I suggest all people looking for a Basenji, even my own, do this.

This is why it’s so important to do your research and purchase from a reputable breeder. It’s unfortunate that there so so many backyard breeders and scammers out there that want to take advantage of people.

    To Whom It May Concern,
I purchased a Puppy from [removed URL]

I looked at their web site. No information about sire and dam, litter size, littermates, health information on parents, what vaccinations have been done, etc. etc. I'm sorry this happened to you, but the red flags were everywhere on that website!!!

Personally I would not buy a pup from a breeder unless I could visit and see both pups and parents, at least the dam if sire is off site. An older dog I might and have had shipped to me sight unseen, but in the two cases I have adopted an older dog the only cost to me was shipping and the only thing "in it" for the breeder who trusted me was that their dog would have a good Basenji savvy home....

  • Bought our Basenji in Newton Iowa from a breeder .Good companion dog.

Post me privately (after you have read my website (thanks for the plug, Redial !)) and I will sendyou a list of the Breed Club secretaries. There are quite a few litters on the ground this winter bit I imagine most are sold or at least bespoke. You may need to get on a list for next season.

@debradownsouth I disagree about letting Bs pack with older dogs. I had my B for 16 years and she was trained by older well-trained dogs. They do model their behavior after the dogs because they want to be members of the Pack. I also had 2 Wolves and my B accepted them immediately. When I would walk the dog and the Wolf, the other dogs in the Park dragged their owners out of the Park. Canines, no matter the Breed, are terrified of Wolves. I have video of my B and my Wolf engaging in mutual grooming. Due to that I am convinced that the Basenji is related to the Ancient Wolves. If that were not the case my B would have been terrified just like the other Dogs in the Park. She adored her Wolves and grieved when they passed.

Also, check with Camp Basenji. Although she's in FL, she has homes up north and is willing to transport to the right home. Contact her because she doesn't list most dogs on the site. http://www.campbasenji.org/

I think they're trying to look legit! Knowing that most "ethical" breeders ask a good amount for our dogs (course mind you we have a lot of money stuck into our dogs prior to the "sale" price). And the fact that we're not into dogs to make money.
