Seeking a red and white puppy in France

Basenjis For Sale or Wanted
  • I am looking for a red basenji, male or female puppy. A bold and confident character, ideally smaller but if it’s a larger dog that’s fine too.

I’m in Antibes for the rest of the year. I know the restrictions and very difficult at the moment. I’m happy to help brainstorm collection or delivery of the dog while travel continues to be restricted

  • @sophiebufton Just wanted to prepare you... most, if not all, of this years puppies probably have homes already. Basenji's typically breed once/year. Which could mean that you have to wait until next year to bring a pup home. I would suggest that you focus on finding a reputable breeder for now, and get on their waiting list for a pup.

That said, you may find an adult through a breeder. Someimes they retire breeding stock. Sometimes a pup doesn't work out, is returned to the breeder, and ready to be placed with a new home. (It's something to consider.)

  • While American breeders do indeed often rehome Basenjis once they have finished, ie. become a champion, this is far less prevalent in Europe.

Post me privately - my email address is on my website listed in my signature block - and I will put you in touch with breeders for next winter's crop of puppies

@EmKayLyn Another suggestion - you should also read “Don’t Do the Breed a Disservice” and the “Zande Put-Off” @ https://www.zandebasenjs.com

@condesa said in How much puppy exercise?: Thanks so much! Makes me feel better. And I got her from Nocturnal Kennels in NC. Are the sire/dam DNA tested for Fanconi and PRA? Did you check for yourself at www.ofa.org as DNA tests for Fanconi/PRA are public posted for the results. If not you should have your girl tested. It is a cheek swab that you do yourself. You can order it at www.ofa.org and the cost is 65.00 for each test (Fanconi & PRA)

Go to www.basenji.org and search by state. Most likely you can find a breeder that might have or be breeding Black/White...

I think signalling is a great idea, although I have never used it. A friend taught her two Bichons to do it with a bell at the door. My dogs always let me know when they needed out. We had a regular routine, but if a potty break was needed at some other time, restless pacing and trotting toward the door was a pretty clear picture. Never a problem. Worst thing is the sound of a dog beginning to retch and jumping off the bed at 4 a.m. Seldom managed to get outside quick enough!

A lot of people get 2 pups at once, but different litters, opposite sex. I personally prefer one at a time so they bond more with humans than each other. Getting another the next season gives time to get the first settled. Of course, then you have another round of house breaking etc. A lot depends on your own experience with the breed. Good luck ... the link Pat gave you is your best bet for well bred puppies. :)

@dmcarty: Understanding however that breeding carriers to clear is the option that allows to include the widest genetic diversity. Breeding only clear to clear reduces the diversity in the population - shade of what happend to the breed during some of the other health concerns like HA, PRA and Malabsorbtion. Hopefully we learned that throwing the baby out with the bath water is not the most effective way of keeping valuable traits while eliminating health concerns. +1…I could not agree with you more!
