You will be hard pressed to find litters born in August. This is just about the time of year that 90% of Basenjis come in season

Were summer litters more common in the past? My girls were August 10th, 1975. and August 17th, 1982, non related lines, two different breeders but both in Ontario. My boys, OTOH, were November and December babies and U.S. born, but more recent. One from Washington State, one from Ohio. Perhaps I was just lucky to find puppies at a time of year I was looking for one!

Just a further note......I know Basenjis typically only come into season once a year, with some exceptions, and that it is usually in the fall. Totally anecdotal, but BRAT currently has a pure African female, bred in South Sudan, and the birthdate is August 26, 2014. Probably coincidental, but interesting....

  • @eeeefarm - Sometimes situations will bring many Basenji in early... for example on of my girls was born in August and my boy in early September. Basenjis cycled early that year because the Basenji National was in June, one bitch was having a post puppy season and all the others followed suit

  • I found a litter that was born in June. Just waiting for the owner to confirm they're still available.

  • @WingedLion where is this litter located? Thanks.

  • I would think that maybe summer litters are becoming more common as it seems to me that more females are cycling more than once a year. Could that be because they are less dependent on their litters needing to born in Africa's spring? I don't know, just thinking. My one and only Basenji litter was born in June '92.

And, thinking about it, summer in North America is a much better time of year for them to be born. Way nicer weather.

  • @Golf_Guy I seen your post looking for tricolor, so I didn't want to give out info until I secure one. He had 2 females and 1 male tricolor but the male is sold already. I'll post links after I secure one.

  • @Golf_Guy I also found 3 more tricolors available last week but so far the owner has not replied to me. Her name is Dorthy W on Oodle Marketplace. I couldn't post a link because the forum software said it was spam.

  • @WingedLion Thank you for the info!

Please believe me, you are dealing with a puppymill. Please... if you don't care about health of the lines, go through rescue. Do not put money into the hands of people like that. No responsible breeder would put their dogs for sale on that site.

  • @DebraDownSouth Not sure if she is a puppy mill or not. She has 2 Facebook pages you can check out:

    https://www.facebook.com/KoinoniaBasenjis/
    https://www.facebook.com/dorothy.williams.7712

  • @DebraDownSouth I just heard from Dorthy and I don't think she is a puppy mill because she said she wouldn't sell me a Basenji because I live too far away. A puppy mill wouldn't care how far away I lived. All they care about is making the sale.

  • @WingedLion
You are mistaken. I wish that just not selling out of state made someone a responsible breeder.... it doesn't. She breeds to create pets to sell for money.

She has precisely 2 dogs ever on OFA... just Fanconi. No other testing, no titles, nada.
    https://www.ofa.org/results.html?all=Koinonia+Basenjis

I am sorry if I sound harsh... but I've been doing rescue for over 30 years and I have zero respect for irresponsible breeders. There are some breeders who show that aren't responsible. And there are a few breeders who don't show that at least do all the health testing. But honestly it is rare for non-show breeders to be responsible. Doing it right costs money, you don't generally come out ahead unless you are dealing with a breed that has large litters and command a lot of money. The people that care about the breed show them to prove they are worth breeding, that they are producing... not beauty pageants... but dogs that look and move and have the structure they are supposed to have. They know the genetics of the breed, they know lines, they know what health issues are in different lines. They are trying to breed healthy dogs because they care.

For the record, I do not and have never bred basenjis. I got my first one, got her championship pretty fast, and I spayed her. She was lovely, but she was so animal aggressive it was disconcerting and she had autoimmune issues already showing up. I have never loved a dog so much in my life, but genetically she was a wreck. I lost her before her 6th birthday to lymphoma.

Please go down to your local shelter, volunteer to hold dogs as they euthanize them. Just for one day. Just one. Then you may understand how much I hate puppymill/backyard breeders and am so strongly for people either supporting responsible breeders or getting rescues. It matters.

  • @WingedLion - She is not a member of the Basenji Club of America, parent Basenji club

  • Join the Facebook page: "Basenji breeders discussion forum" page. They are talking about this breeder using THEIR photos on that website. It is a puppy mill.

  • They are also discussing this exact topic on BRAT's FB page. The following was written by Wanda Pooley, I don't know how to share the pictures she has posted but I can share the text.

"Well, looky, looky here. A must-see website called www.houseofbasenjis.com that's packed with lies and deception. That tri dog, "Duke," looks oddly familiar.....oh, wait...that's because this really is a picture of Blade, MBIS/MBISS AKC GCH-B ukcCH, Intl CH, CanCh AB Rafiki The Icon of Cool, SDHR, who incidentally has been living with me these past 7 years and not in Philadelphia shelling out puppies with Duchess for this idiot to sell. Take a closer look and you might spot other dogs you recognize as I would venture several of these photos have been pilfered from reputable breeders' website or social media. In the slideshow on the top banner is a picture taken from the AKC library and used in the Illustrated Basenji Standard. The most ironic part of this person's website is the comment "....we want to be sure that you are the right sort of person;..." REALLY?? Who the heck is the "right sort of person" that misrepresents the dogs he/she is trying to sell to innocent prospective buyers and who steals other people's photos? Please, please, please share this post world-wide to make people aware of this deceit."

  • Thanks for all the info. There seems to be another scam site that needs to be called out on Facebook called Basenji Puppies For Sale: https://www.facebook.com/thebasenjis/

  • @WingedLion - As noted there is a conversation going on FB about this House of Basenjis, the pictures they are using are NOT her dogs, especially the Tri Male that is free stacked on their home page. It is a picture of a very well bred Basenji owned by a breeder and a well titled Best In Show male that lives in Texas... Run very fast from this so called breeder

  • @tanza I read the discussion on FB and have no plans on buying from the House of Basenji. I already found a breeder I'm going to buy from.

  • Wow, I was corresponding with the owners of the website over the weekend.
I was very close to pulling the trigger on one that they had listed. It would be my first Basenji..

Just today, I was asking them for more pictures of one of the pups, and I have requested one picture with my email and todays date on a piece of paper next to the one i was interested in.
I haven't heard back from them since I asked for the picture!
Very glad I found this forum and signed up before I went through with it.
I am highly interested in a tri color boy if anyone is selling and is can help arrange transport to california! Good to meet everyone, and I am excited to find a Basenji pup to bring home!

  • Another red flag was when I looked up their web address on ICANN.
It says the website was created "Created Date: 2017-06-25"
    very recent...
Also it looks like it was registered on namecheap.com, and there isn't any info on the registrant, just this:

    Name: WhoisGuard Protected
    Organization: WhoisGuard, Inc.
Mailing Address: P.O. Box 0823-03411, Panama Panama PA
