ISO Basenji Near Iowa!

Basenji Rescue
  • Our family is looking to add a Basenji. We have an 8 year old Basenji mix whom we adopted as a puppy from a local rescue. Best dog I have ever owned. Two months ago we lost our 12 year old Lab to cancer. Our girl seems so sad without her companion. I have searched high and low for another Basenji and have not had much luck. My search led me here. We are located in north east Iowa and are willing to travel for the right dog. If anyone has any information, please let me know. We want another female- that is not negotiable, and preferably young. Other factors- like whether she is purebred or a mixture makes no difference to us. Thanks so much!

  • First, just be aware that because your basenji got along with another dog doesn't mean she'll accept a new companion, much less a female. That said, I understand the sentiment.

Have you checked with BRAT (Basenji Rescue & Transportation) or even Florida's rescue, CampBasenji?

    http://www.campbasenji.org/

They only list 2... however she has several more that will be ready soon. Pam let's no dog go until she has had them for a while in foster, has a very good idea about any behavior issues and works on them, and their health needs addressed: http://www.campbasenji.org/available-for-adoption/

Brat also only has 2 listed, but I am sure there are more:

While it makes finding a rescue harder, I am glad we are not as overflowing with byb/puppymill breeders like before. But there are rescues out there. Good luck

  • Thanks for the information. I will check out those sites. Ironically, we will be traveling to Florida the second week in June for vacation and will have our girl with us. Our dog is very well socialized and has always been around other dogs- bigger, smaller, dominant and submissive. She is great with everyone. The only thing she ever has shown aggressive interest in was a bunny :) I have learned a lot about the breed both experience and research since adopting 8 years ago. I understand your words of caution, as this breed is not one for just anyone. Again, thank you so very much!

  • Also you might try www.basenji.org and go to the link to find a breeder. You can search by state. Sometimes a breeder is looking to place a retired show dog that they will not be using in their breeding program

Kirsten that would be a fantastic time to visit her, see the dogs, see how your dog does with them. We sent our basenji and Samoyed to her for some help in getting them to get along. Pam is pretty magical. Okay, Pam is REALLY magical.

  • @Bakerfamalee Beware of people on here who say... "I have a friend who is a breeder." They might leave you their phone # or an email. If they have a friend who really IS a good breeder but perhaps they don't have papers for their litters, don't fall into their "fishing" trap.....ask that person to post the website or phone # as well as their name on here PUBLICLY!

  • Are you still looking? Would you be interested in Molly from Ontario?

He did look like he had short legs but I thought his body was long for a Rat Terrier. I am so used to them having a docked tail and much more white on the body. I thought he may be a poorly bred Basenji. Mansfield is not too far away from the Amish area. I wonder if he barks much! Jennifer

Here's what I know: 2 bites to one foster mom. The first was over chicken, trying to take it away from him. The second was over going into the crate. I have not seen any aggression over the crate unless you're forcing him in, he goes in great with a little treat, and now we don't even have to do that. He sleeps in the crate and goes in there when he's not supervised or we're not home. I think she needed stitches for both, but she's older and disabled.

@Janneke: Sahel is a gorgeous girl! I hope she finds a good home soon! This is what I don't understand.. The pup is about a year old and the owner wants to get rid of her because: "I'll be traveling and working more this year, so I'm finding a new home for a beautiful and sweet female Basenji" What about thinking before getting a dog :( It is possible that the owner has a new job, something possibly unexpected especially with the sketchy job market in the US presently. In any case it sounds as if the owner cares about her and would like to find a good home.
