We have three rescues; our recent one folks keep telling us is a Basenji mix

Basenji Talk
  • We are looking for some insight on what our little 9 month old curly tailed girl is. When she was the tiny runt of the litter that no one wanted, we took her and thought she was a rednosed pit because of her nose and eye coloring. Now she seems to fit the profile of the Basenji....maybe hound mix? Thoughts? Not certain is this is how you post a photo here, but could not find another way....

  • I'm not seeing any photo. How big is she? Height and weight? Does she bark? Any other vocalizations?

To upload a photo, either drag it from your computer into the message window or click on the arrow above the post you are creating (right side symbol) or hotlink it from another site, such as photobucket.

  • I'm not sure why your pictures are not showing up. I'm going to experiment.

O.K. that seems to work. I dragged and dropped it and I see it. Now to check whether others can also see it! This is a picture of my two girls, taken a long time ago......probably in the '80s.

I am wondering if the picture you are trying to upload is too big. Trying that now. I am not seeing the picture I just uploaded, so that may be the problem.

Yes, I think that is the key. Downsize your picture and I bet it will work properly. As you see, I get the same uploading message that you did, but no picture, when I try to upload a large file.

He is a cutie. Looks like he is getting lots of love and he will return it. Glad you have him.

While I applaud you for wanting to rescue this little Basenji, they are not doghouse kind of dogs. They want to be with their human pack as much as possible, and keep in mind that just because they are an African breed, this little girl may have been out of Africa's climate for many generations and may not fare well in intense heat. My black and white girl does not do well in our FLorida heat for example. She prefers the air-conditioned sun she lies in inside the house. Basenjis are escape artists as well, and she may be able to get out of your yard. If you cannot keep this self-cleaning, low shedding dog in the house with you and you cannot locate the owner, Then Basenji Rescue and Transport is a good place to turn to find to find this little girl a loving home with Basenji saavy fosters and adopters. Best of luck to both of you.

I am no expert but I looked at the photo before reading your post and I thought it was one. The classic white shoulders, upright ears, pointed nose and shape of face....I agree a profile view would add but it would not be hard to convince me this dog has some basenji genes.

I would have to say yes, I believe your loving India is in fact, part Basenji. After the research that you have done, does she have the typical Basenji charicteristics.

, even the strange voices seem to appear in many pariah type dogs. I can so see that, Moses, our almost 9 month old portuguese podengo grande sounds just like a howlling, yodeling basenji at times, then he breaks into this excruciatingly loud bark..
